About the home

La Vieille Maison dates back to the 19th Century and has recently undergone a complete renovation. It has been finished to a high standard and has many original features on show - such as wooden beams and a stone staircase.

On the ground floor there is a fully equipped kitchen which leads into the cosy lounge. Here you will find a log burner for those long winter nights and comfortable sofas on which to relax.

There is a separate utility area to the other side of the kitchen, with a WC, washing machine and office area - with a computer allowing internet access.

On the first floor are two en suite bedrooms - one with a king sized bed, and the other with two twin beds. Both have built in wardrobes and a chest of drawers. There is a cot for young children, and a high chair, changing mat and plastic crockery & cutlery is also provided.

Outside is a lovely terrace, with patio chairs, table and a BBQ. This leads on to the lawned gardens where you will find the heated pool, children's swings and plenty of space for the children to run around! There is also a large games room with PS2, Gameracer seat and many other toys for your children.

Conditions

- Smoking is only allowed in the terrace and garden areas.
- Pets are not allowed.
- A 30% deposit is required to secure the reservation, with the remaining 70% to be paid 8 weeks prior to the holiday.
- A £100 damages deposit is also required, and this will be returned within 2 weeks of your stay.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region

St Juire is set in the beautiful countryside of the Vendée. In the nearby unspoilt village of Bazoges you will find a magnificent medieval donjon (keep) along with its beautifully laid out garden and a very popular restaurant. For those who fancy a stroll, there is a large picturesque lake at St Martin Lars or a lovely walk along the river banks, behind the chateau at Sainte Hermine.

Luçon, with its 16th century cathedral and hidden Jardin Dumaine, is within a 20 minutes easy drive. The renaissance town of Fontenay-Le-Comte offers guided tours around the Chateau de Terre Neuve and a lot more besides.

For a spot of wine-tasting, head of to the nearby town of Mareuil-sur-Lay, where local wines can be sampled. Fishing is a popular sport in the Vendée and there are many lakes and rivers to choose from. If golf is your preferred sport, there a 5 golf courses in the region.

The famous sandy Vendéen beaches are approximately a 45 minute drive away, where a host of water sports are available. The unmissable theme park of Le Puy de Fou is 50 minutes away and the exciting and fun-packed Futuroscope is to be found at Poitiers.

The St Juire Champgillon area

La Maison en Pierre is set in the picturesque village of St Juire where you will find a bar/cafe, a small shop and an excellent restaurant, as well as a hairdresser and the Mairie, where postcards & stamps can be purchased. Fresh bread is delivered to the village 3 times a day, so a local baguette is always available.

The village hosts a small, yet popular local produce market on the 1st Sunday morning of the month and every Sunday morning in July & August. St Juire is known for its free art exhibitions hosted during the summer months. It is surrounded by deserted farm tracks that are perfect for easy and safe cycling and walking.

La Maison en Pierre and La Vieille Maison are located approximately a 3 hour drive from St Malo, 4.5 hours from Cherbourg or 7 hours from Calais.

Our closest airport is Nantes at only 50 minutes away, with the smaller airport of La Rochelle only 55 minutes away. The budget airlines of Ryan Air, Jet2 and Flybe all use these airports. Car hire is available from both airports.

We’ve had a great week in this lovely part of France. Have really enjoyed staying at La Vielle Maison – a very comfortable house and extremely well equipped. Great for children too with all the essentials provided, lots of toys and plenty of outside space. Weather has been very hot, so we’ve made good use of the pool and enjoyed relaxing on the loungers in the shade of the walnut trees. Thanks to Mick & Jan for their great welcome and hospitality! Homegrown veg and cherries from the tree were a lovely bonus. We would also recommend the restaurant in the village for lunch – four courses and coffee for 11.50, and only 2 mins. walk from the house. Lots to do in the surrounding area too. We hope to be back!

Thank you for lending us your house for our holiday. I liked the swimming pool; it really cooled me down on the hot days. Martha, my baby sister, loved jumping in the pool. Me & Martha loved going on the swings. I liked going on the car game and Martha liked playing with the toy dog – she took him everywhere. I will miss everything. Love from Tilly, aged 7
We have had a wonderful 2 weeks. We have all loved playing in the pool, running around your lovely garden and picking & eating the fruit & veg. Everything we needed was in the house. You both made us feel so welcome and in doing so, added greatly to our stay.
The aquarium (La Rochelle) was good. The beaches were brilliant (thanks for the bodyboard!!) The girls loved the little zoo (Mervent) and Tilly has been thrilled that people understand her when she buys our bread!
We hope to be back to see the changes in the barn and to sample some of Mick’s (or Nit’s as Martha calls him!) beer!
