The Isle of Man region
The Isle of Man is of great geographical and historical interest. Celtic and Viking influences abound. Situated in the Irish Sea between Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales, the island was under Norwegian rule for many years following the Viking invasions. The Vikings are remembered annually in battle re-enactments at the Peel Viking Festival which attracts modern day Vikings from far afield.
The award winning museums and heritage sites on the island include Peel Castle, Castle Rushen, Laxey Wheel and mines, the Manx museum in Douglas, House of Manannan Heritage Centre in Peel, the Peggy (history of the boat used in smuggling activities) museum in Castletown and Cregneash village which includes a working farm, thatched fishermen's cottages and the home of the last native Manx speaker. Regular demonstrations of carding, spinning, weaving and Manx traditional cookery take place during the summer months.
St Johns, Isle of Man area
Tynwald Fair Day is held annually on 5th July. This is a national Bank Holiday which celebrates the longest continuous government in the world. On this day the laws are read out in both Manx and English. Perhaps the most famous events on the island are the TT and Manx Grand Prix motor bike races which take place in June and August. Other popular events include the Laxey Blues Festival in May, the Chruinnaght (Manx music and dance festival in July), the Cooish (Manx language Festival in November) as well as the Easter Festival of darts and the newly established walking festival.
