Driving in Snow
Snow-chains, which are compulsory items to carry in your car in this area during Winter, may be needed for getting in and out of the car-park, after heavy snowfall and before the snowplough arrives. SUV owners won't have any trouble.
Skiing information
Excellent skiing is available in Grand Bornand and La Clusaz with a range of runs from Green to Black. Off-piste skiing is also a possibility, but please use a guide for your own safety. You can drive to the base of the lifts in many cases, or perhaps more conveniently, use the ski-bus, which is free with your carte d'hote. They run very regularly through the season. We can highly recommend an excellent ski school based in St Jean (Aravis Concept). The owner, Emmanuael Schlitz, has done wonders with our 7 year-old, who worships him as a hero! He's also good with useless adults like Claire and I. He and his team speak English and offer a full range of classes, both individual and group (max group size typically 6 people). We recommend Contat Sports for your ski hire; the shop is very close to the apartment. You can get a 10% discount on equipment rental with flyers available in the apartment. Have fun!
The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region

Haute Savoie covers the northern region of the Alps, close to Geneva and with the famous lakeside resort town of Annecy at its heart. The climate is cold and snowy in the Winter and very warm in the summer. It's an outdoor paradise with activities for all ages in both main seasons.
The Aravis alpine area, extending from the Plateau des Glières to the Col de la Colombière and Col des Aravis, enjoys a peaceful and relaxed pace of life. Spruce forests continue to supply wood for a thriving forestry sector, while attractive mountain pastures are the backbone of the famous Reblochon cheese industry. Ramblers will find walks and hikes to suit a range of fitness levels, with delightful village resorts waiting to be explored at the foot of the Aravis mountain chain.
This region is extremely popular wth the French, and is also the only place we are aware of where you can do guided night skiing!
The St Jean de Sixt area
St Jean-de-Sixt is a very pretty village, flanked by dramatic mountains and breath-taking scenery. Within easy reach of Geneva airport, only 30km from Annecy and 5 mins drive from the major resorts of La Clusaz and Grand Bornand; St Jean makes for an excellent and varied holiday destination and base.
The village itself is well-served by shops and amenities, including bakeries, several restaurants and bars, sports shops for ski hire and sale, newsagent, hairdresser, pizza parlour and mini-supermarket. There are also tennis courts, a children's playground, petrol station and a tourist office. Various activities within and around the village include excellent summer walking plus snow shoe trails in winter, a range of cross-country skiing tracks and a sled piste and nursery slope. The ski bus, or your car, will take you across to Grand Bornand or up to La Clusaz where extensive ski slopes from beginner to expert are situated. In Winter there is a bus from Geneva airport to the village.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Geneva: 65 km |
| Railway: | Annecy: 30 km |
| Ferry: | Calais: 850 km |
The nearest airport at Geneva is only 40 minutes drive away from our apartment. It is served by a variety of airlines, including budget carriers like Easyjet. Cars can be rented here and we've found Holiday Autos to be the best broker for getting cheap deals. There are 2 sides to the airport: Swiss and French, check both sides for the cheapest deal. International flights arrive on the Swiss side and this is more convenient both for collecting your car and the onward travel to our apartment.
If driving, the French autoroute system is excellent, fast and relatively quiet compared to our own motorways, although they are toll roads and you can expect to pay around €65 each way. The journey from Calais is around 10 hours including stops, so you probably need an overnight stay on route. We tend to use the Eurotunnel as it's so quick and not affected by bad weather, an important consideration if travelling in the Winter. However, there are also lots of cheap ferries running the Dover to Calais route, which is your best access point into France for the trip down to the Alps.

Booking was easy as was checking in. The apartment is well equipped and very clean and set in a great location on the mountians of this region. We enjoyed excellent weather and places like Annecy are a must to visit as is Yvoire on the shores of Lake Geneva. There is plenty to do - sightseeing, walking, relaxing even hire bikes to ride around Lake Annecy. Access is easy either by road or Air. Excellent value for money - a pity the exchange rate is poor at present! |
Guestbook for Ski Apartment in Aravis Alps
"Thank you for the rent of the apartment – it was definitely the best ski accommodation we have ever rented in France. It made a huge difference to the typical ‘shoe box’ type found in the traditional resorts."
Mr Tomlinson, Cardiff
"Would definitely recommend your accommodation to others. Many thanks we had a great time!"
Mrs Fisher, London

"We had a wonderful holiday in St Jean - and your apartment is great. It all went really well for us. Madame Gisele is very nice and I enjoyed dredging out my schoolboy French of 25+ years to chat with her... The whole area is so beautiful - and we hope that we will return."
Mr Davison, Dublin
"We had a great holiday and were impressed with the layout and comforts of your apartment. It is in a fantastic location with a short walk to the Ski hire, bus stop and bakery."
Mr Calderwood, N. Ireland
"It was idyllic! You have a fabulous apartment in a really good location for skiing, walking and cycling. It is perfect for the latter, in particular, if you get any other enquiries from cyclist. There are so many good routes and cols to conquer and fine scenery, too. We thought the booking process was informative and easy, we loved the personal touch and concern from you, the apartment is very well-equipped and everything worked well."
Mr Dorey, Kent
