The Rhone/French Alps region
Les Portes du Soleil is a major ski sports destination in the northern French alps (Chablais Alps) encompassing thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. With more than 650 km of marked pistes and about 200 lifts in total, spread over 14 valleys and about 400 square miles (1036 square km) Portes du Soleil ranks among the two largest ski areas in the world (the other being Les Trois Vallees).
Almost all of the pistes are connected by lifts - only a few marginal towns can only be reached by the free bussservices in the area. Highest point of skiing is app. 2.400 metres and the lowest is app. 900 metres. As with many other Alpine ski resorts, the lower slopes of the Portes du Soleil have snow-making facilities to extend the skiable season by keeping the lower slopes open during the warmer months.
St Jean d'Aulps
Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is a commune is the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Situated in the heart of the Vallée d'Aulps, as well as being the home to an active farming community, it is popular with holiday-makers in the Summer, for walking, and in the Winter for skiing as it is a part of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area.
The closest town is Thonon les Bains 25km away. The river "la Dranse de Morzine" is the main water course through the village. In the commune, at an altitude of 805m, is the ski-area "l’Espace Roc d’Enfer". One can ski between 900m and 1800m above sea-level and offers, amongst wild, unspoilt, and preserved terrain, 20 pistes (ski-runs) givings a total of 40km of tracks. A large portion of these tracks are covered by artificial snow-making machines to make the skiing more snow-sure in lighter Winters. Saint-Jean-d'Aulps also offers many summer-time activities, namely: rock climbing, via ferrata, walking and hiking, mountain-biking routes, fishing, and para-gliding.
The village grew up round Aulps Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded at the very end of the 11th century and suppressed in 1793 during the French Revolution. The buildings were reduced to ruins in 1823 when they were quarried for stone to rebuild the village's parish church. The ruins of the Abbey is now a local tourist attraction.

"What a fantastic place to have a holiday!"
This was our first summer holiday in the Alps having only previously enjoyed skiing holidays in the mountains. And what a great holiday it turned out to be.
Saint Jean D'Aulps is a lively, pretty and typically French village, nice restaurants, pub and friendly locals. It is very easy to relax straight away and get into the French way of life.
That is made even easier with the home away from home that is Chalet Beinn. Although we obviously knew it was a 5 bed property we were delighted at the amount of space in the chalet and even with 10 adults we didn't feel in the least bit crowded. The best part of the chalet is the lovely open plan living room and kitchen. It is a very social area and we had lots of fun nights in. There is also a big fireplace which I can only imagine makes the place very cosy in the winter.
There was lots to do in and around St. Jean and the Tourist Office in the village was very helpful in answering all of our questions regarding walks/hikes in the area. The hikes were great, we mixed it up with some easier and harder days, we certainly weren't short of options. Mountain biking is a very popular activity in the area as well but none of our group tried it on this holiday....
The owner of the property also couldn't have been more helpful, his quick response to any of our silly questions before we got to St Jean was great and the information that was sent on from him prior to our arrival made everything very easy.
There are plenty of good food options in and around St Jean D'Aulps and we had a couple of nights out but the best nights were in the Chalet, usually with the BBQ!
Overall it was a great holiday, a lovely village and charming chalet. We are hoping to go back to the chalet this winter for some skiing fun!!
