The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Our 'AlpineVue' self catering apartment in Le Domaine de Cimes is situated within the small ski station village of La Grande Terche near St Jean D’Aulps and 10 minutes away from the busier Portes de Soleil resorts of Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz. Our apartment in Domaine de Cimes is perfect for both winter and summer holidays. The ski lift is less than 150 yards from our balcony, which has west facing uninterrupted views across the piste and up the valley towards the mountains.
During the summer months there are many areas of historic interest and cultural highlights, all within 45 minutes easy travel from the apartment. Good places to visit are Yvoires and Evian, Lake Geneva, Lake Annecy, Chamonix, Mont Blanc (breathtaking gondola ride to the summit highly recommended), with Switzerland and Italy less than 45 minutes drive for day trips.
St Jean d'Aulps area
The region is paradise for those who love skiing in the winter to those who enjoy the outdoors and the sunshine in the summer. Below are a list of just some of things that you can do with your time here – of course, for those of you who want to sit back and relax you don’t need to do anything!
Walking This goes without saying but the walks are varied for all abilities from a stroll along Lake Montriond to mountain walking in the peaks. Maps can be found on the www.stjeandaulps.com website and also from the tourist information and the information pack in our apartment. St Jean D’Aulps has the added benefit of the ski lifts being opened for 2 days a week throughout the summer for walkers, mountain bikers and picnickers.
Golf Anyone fancying a round or two of golf you really are spoilt – you can play at Les Gets where you will find stunning views of the snow-clad Mont Blanc from the 14th Tee. Or, you can play at Avoriaz overlooking the mountains and valleys in the sunshine.
Swimming Two main lakes for outdoor supervised swimming can be found at Lake Montriond and Les Gets. Crystal clear water and not overcrowded with diving platforms at Les Gets. This is the perfect way to cool down in the summer. If you would like a nice day out go to Lake Annecy and enjoy the waters there, maybe hire a boat for the afternoon and swim all day.
Fishing Get away from it all and leave the crowded fishing from the UK behind. Locally there are 4 lakes that you can choose from all in beautiful surroundings where you can pitch yourself against the wild trout. The lakes are Montriond, Jotty, Tavaneuse and Mines d’Or. All can be fished with a permit for around 10 Euros a day. There is also excellent river fishing on the River Dranse. Fishing shops are nearby for tackle hire and extra equipment, guides, permits etc. See www.valleedaulps.com for photos of the lakes.
Mountain Biking Suitable for all levels including those enthusiasts who are happy going as fast as they can down steep hills! There are championship level courses from Lets Gets and the downhill French Cup and Cyclosportive in June from Morzine. For those of you who would like a more relaxed ride there are many routes where you can go it alone or even have a guided tour. Ski lifts are open during the summer for access to downhill courses. The routes can be downloaded in advance from www.valleedaulps.com. Bikes can be hired locally from St Jean D'Aulps for the duration of your stay.
Paragliding and Ballooning This is undoubtedly the best way to take in the spectacular views. Paragliding schools will offer you everything from a one off experience to courses for those interested in solo flights. If you don’t fancy having a go for yourself it is still breathtaking watching others and the competitions are spectacular.
Rafting White-water rafting and kayaking is available on the River Dranse see www.valleedaulps.com for information.
