The Rhone/French Alps region
The Haute -Savoie is an excellent holiday destination and having lived in the area for over 10 years we thoroughly recommend it for a holiday spot.
There are many ourdoor activities such as mountain biking, road biking, skiing, paragliding, watersports and of course fantastic hiking and climbing - the list is endless. If you prefer a more leisurely break there are many interesting historic towns to visit and a huge choise of fantastic restaurants not to mention the wine.
Famous for its world class ski resorts the area is also wonderful in summer and temperatures are regularly in the low to mid 30s in summer months. Heading up the mountains for some fantastic walking or having a dip in one of the lovely lakes is a lovely way of cooling down.
St Jean d'Aulps
St Jean D'Aulps is a wonderful little village located just outside Morzine. It forms part of the Portes du Soleil ski and mountain bike range and offers excellent value for money for family skiing during the winter months. The village with its fantastic boulongerie is located below the ski area (which was previously known as La Grande Terche - now St Jean Station). Here you can find a weekly market, a couple of good restaurants and an excellent local pub. There is also a cheese shop, a bank, a supermarket and a tourist office which contains lots of info on what to do in the area.
The village itself also has the old Abbey ruins which has a good visitors center and not far from this is a great climbing area along with a coupe of via ferrata routes for the summer months.
The ski are ( St Jean Station) is just under a couple of km up the hill from the village center and the road to it is dotted with lots of little hamlets and chalets so the village feels like it stretches up towards the ski lifts. The ski station has some good restaurants, a couple of lively local bars (fantastic New Years celebrations have been had here), a ski school, supermarket and ski hire shop. It is fairly quiet during summer months apart from the peak of July and August and is busy during winter season fom the middle of Dec until early April.
