The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The Charente-Maritime region of France is renowned for being the second sunniest region in the country.
Because of the central locality of our house most of your destinations can be reached within an hour. This is such a varied region that you can do something different every day.
The long golden beaches along from Royan are within easy reach as is La Rochelle with it's harbour-side restaurants that serve the freshest mussels ever tasted.
Cognac, the home of the famous tipple has open air tours of the town that stop at the Hennessey cognac house by the river Charente.
Futurascope theme park at Poitiers is a good day out and the fireworks and laser show at the end of the evening are spectacular.
The old Roman built town of Saintes with it's famous amphitheatre where gladiators once fought is close by. 20,000 people decend here every July for a series of concerts.

For those who enjoy a round of golf there are many courses within easy reach and if you can’t bring your clubs with you we have a set in the downstairs hall cupboard that you can use free of charge.

Many of the roads/lanes in the area are linked by tracks and, as it’s so peaceful are ideal for walking or cycling.

St Jean d'Angely area

The nearest town is Matha (about 3.5 miles distant). At the last count there were a couple of bars, a restaurant, pizzaria, boulangerie, patisserie, boucherie, two banks and three supermarkets. On the last Friday of every month the streets come alive for market day. Only 15mins away is the historic bustling town of St Jean D’Angeley that is brimming with atmosphere. There are two market days here per week to pick up your local produce and just soak up the ambiance. Many restaurants, cafes and bars can be found nestling among the cobbled streets. St Jean also has a sports centre that hosts an olympic size swimming pool with water slides etc.
