Le Pommier
About the home
This light and airy studio cottage comes equipped with all you require for your holiday. Tastefully decorated with plenty of storage space, a well equipped kitchen, a very comfortable sofa bed and large shower room, it is ideal for couples. Equally it could appeal to grandparents wanting to holiday with the family but looking for their own bit of space and quiet - the family can be in one of our other gites but the grandparents can have the luxury of a space they can call their own!
Lovely features of this gite are its three patios that allow you to follow the sun throughout the day, the covered stone well outside the back door and the views out over the apple orchard and the surrounding countryside.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The Charente Maritime Department has one of the highest records for sunshine in France, after the Mediterranean, and at any time of the year you can experience days of beautiful sunshine, making it an ideal choice for early and late season breaks, as well as summer holidays. Even during the warm summer months, at the height of the holiday season, the roads are quiet, allowing you to explore all the attractions of this beautiful region - the old roman towns and churches, the local markets, the small villages beside the Charente and Boutonne rivers, the fields of vineyards and sunflowers. Try popping into one of the many producers of our local drinks - Pineau des Charentes and Cognac for a little 'degustation' (tasting).
The St Jean d'Angely / Ste Meme area
St Jean d'Angely, Saintes and Cognac are all within easy reach. St Jean d'Angely is a picturesque market town only ten minutes away, with swimming pool complex, river and lake and numerous cafes and restaurants. It is an ideal place to do your shopping, with its Wednesday and Saturday markets being among the best in the area. The village of Ste Même has its own general store, ideal for those last minute purchases and for your morning baguette for breakfast on the terrace.
Saintes is a chic river town with pedestrian streets, a roman amphitheatre and a cultured air. Cognac is a charming and characterful town with an interesting produce market, summer jazz and blues festivals and a variety of cognac distilleries. You've tasted Remy Martin, now visit where it is produced and sniff it straight from the barrel. Further afield, but still within an hour's drive, are the fascinations of La Rochelle, Rochefort, Angouleme, Ile de Ré and some lovely seaside towns. More information on all the local tourist attractions is available in the gite.
For the children, the attractively laid out zoo outside Royan allows for a really close encounter with the animals and at the 'Valley of the Monkeys' at Romagne, south of Poitiers, you can stroll through a beautiful park and discover 30 different species of monkeys and watch them being fed. A short drive away, St Savinien sits on the Charente river and has its own lake where the children can ride on perfect miniatures of fishing boats, cross channel ferries and paddle steamers. For older children (and adults), there is the opportunity to go kayaking on the Charente or experience the excitement of go-karting and off-road buggies.

We felt this was the right choice from the outset - booking was very easy and we were able to make contact with the owners (Jim & Irene) easily to organise the details and also they were happy to help by getting some shopping for us ahead of our arrival just in case we arrived late etc. Jim & Irene were great hosts and quickly made us feel very welcome and at home. The Gite itself is completely as advertised. It is very comfortable & well equipped, perfect for two and is one of three Gites. Jim & Irene are in the main house on the same site as the other Gite's. The pool and gardens are excellent. This Gite also benefits from having 3 patio's so you can enjoy the sun all day. The location is very quiet and peaceful - we spent a couple of days just looking around the St Meme and the surrounding local area either on foot or using the bikes that are on site. There is a shop and small restaurant / bar in St Meme (we used the shop but didn't get around to trying the local restaurant). The Gite is also really well located for the roads to the larger towns / tourist areas all of which are well worth a visit (St Jean d'Angely - 10/15 mins; Saintes / Cognac - 30mins; La Rochelle - 75/90 mins). All in all it was a great holiday, in a lovely location - the only downside from our perspective was we wished we had booked for more than 1 week. |

We received a really warm welcome from the owners Jim and Irene. They are the perfect hosts, although they live on site they are available when you need them but are otherwise unobtrusive. The village has a restaurant and an alimentation for fresh bread etc each morning. You are ideally based for trips to La Rochelle/Ile de Re, Rochefort, Royan, Niort, Angouleme, Saintes and Cognac. On site there are toys for the children. The pool is clean and well maintained. The accommodation is clean, fully equipped and well maintained having all you will need. We have really enjoyed our stay here and plan to return. We would recommend staying here to friends and family without hesitation. |
Guestbook for Le Pommier
Le Pommier is just right for 2 people and St Jean d'Angely has everything, wonderful patisseries, markets and restaurants. We had a great time. Tricia & Gordon, Glasgow
We stayed here a week and have had a wonderful relaxed time. The gite is very well equipped and immaculate. We toured the area and particularly enjoyed Cognac, Saintes, St Jean d'Angely, but most of all St Savinien with its boating pond. The chateau at Roche Courbon is well worth a visit - the grounds and views are very special. All in all it has been a very relaxing holiday - thank you Jim & Irene and best wishes for the future. Pauline & Paton, Dunlop
We felt heavenly! Thank you so much for your hospitality which made our stay relaxing and just wonderful. The gite is perfect and so well equipped that we do not want to leave. The surrounding area is perfect for biking, sight-seeing or enjoying French cuisine. We will definitely try to come back and will recommend this place to family and friends. Thank you for everything. Inga and Jacob, Germany.
Spent a very relaxing fortnight in Le Pommier. The studio is very comfortable, well equipped and private. Irene & Jim are the perfect hosts. Thanks a lot. Sandra & David, Belfast
We had a wonderful stay in Le Pommier. You are so centrally located to all the Charente Maritime has to offer. The pool was an added bonus. Dennis and Therese, New South Wales.
What a peaceful place to stay. The gite is equipped to 5 star standard and we have been very comfortable. Lots of interesting places to visit in the region and lots of good restaurants at reasonable prices. We would hope to visit again in the future. Margaret and Tony, Waterlooville
