Le Châtaignier
About the home
Le Châtaignier is one of three holiday cottages in the grounds of our Charente house, Les Grands Arbres, in the heart of sunny Charente Maritime, close to Saintes, Cognac and St Jean d'Angely. With its airy bedroom and king-size bed it is ideal for couples or for families with up to 2 children, as a comfortable double sofa bed on the ground floor is available.
We aim to give a warm welcome to all our guests and we hope that onsite facilities and the nearby amenities will enable you to experience the sort of holiday that you enjoy - whether it is exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside, visiting the numerous tourist attractions, shopping at the local markets for fresh produce for your dinner, dining at a typical french restaurant, or simply sitting on your private terrace with a glass of wine and listening to the birdsong.
Our guests love it here and for us it is a great joy to provide something which is so much appreciated.

Further details indoors:
This is a light airy gite and its high level of insulation helps keep it cool in summer and cosy in the winter. The gite is furnished with good quality fittings and with a great attention to detail, with everything from reading lamps, clothes drying-rack to chopping boards and cool bag. You'll find a starter pack of salt, pepper, herbs, oil, sugar, tea and coffee in the kitchen cupboards and a welcoming bottle of wine. The beds are made up for your arrival with attractive bedding, and towels, including kitchen towels, are provided, although we do ask that you bring your own beach towels.
For those of you with young families, we can provide a cot, highchair, baby bath, safety gate and a selection of toys suitable for babies and toddlers.
Further details outdoors:
A large, open-plan games barn contains table tennis and table football, and other outdoor games are available. There is also a swing-set for young children and a selection of bikes to suit a variety of ages. (We recommend you bring your own safety helmets.) The heated swimming pool is available June to mid September and sometimes earlier, when the weather justifies it.
The gite is set in large gardens with mature trees and interesting flowers throughout the growing season and you are welcome to help yourselves to the herbs growing in the trough beside the pool. There is an apple orchard, from which we get an abundance of apples that are turned into delicious apple jelly. The garden is also home to many birds, including delightful black redstarts and colourful hoopoes. The property backs onto open countryside and you can often see birds of prey swooping in the sky above.

Enquire nowThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente Maritime Department has one of the highest records for sunshine in France, after the Mediterranean, and at any time of the year you can experience days of beautiful sunshine, making it an ideal choice for early and late season breaks, as well as summer holidays. Even during the warm summer months, at the height of the holiday season, the roads are quiet, allowing you to explore all the attractions of this beautiful region - the old roman towns and churches, the local markets, the small villages beside the Charente and Boutonne rivers, the fields of vineyards and sunflowers. Try popping into one of the many producers of our local drinks - Pineau des Charentes and Cognac for a little 'degustation' (tasting).
The St Jean d'Angely / Ste Meme area
St Jean d'Angely, Saintes and Cognac are all within easy reach. St Jean d'Angely is a picturesque market town only ten minutes away, with swimming pool complex, river and lake and numerous cafes and restaurants. It is an ideal place to do your shopping, with its Wednesday and Saturday markets being among the best in the area. The village of Ste Même has its own general store, ideal for those last minute purchases and for your morning baguette for breakfast on the terrace.
Saintes is a chic river town with pedestrian streets, a roman amphitheatre and a cultured air. Cognac is a charming and characterful town with an interesting produce market, summer jazz and blues festivals and a variety of cognac distilleries. You've tasted Remy Martin, now visit where it is produced and sniff it straight from the barrel. Further afield, but still within an hour's drive, are the fascinations of La Rochelle, Rochefort, Angouleme, Ile de Ré and some lovely seaside towns. More information on all the local tourist attractions is available in the gite.
For the children, the attractively laid out zoo outside Royan allows for a really close encounter with the animals and at the 'Valley of the Monkeys' at Romagne, south of Poitiers, you can stroll through a beautiful park and discover 30 different species of monkeys and watch them being fed. A short drive away, St Savinien sits on the Charente river and has its own lake where the children can ride on perfect miniatures of fishing boats, cross channel ferries and paddle steamers. For older children (and adults), there is the opportunity to go kayaking on the Charente or experience the excitement of go-karting and off-road buggies.
