Home description
This property is south facing, in its own grounds and situated in the quiet rural village of St Martin de Juillers. Whilst benefiting from the peace and tranquillity of its rural location, it is at the same time not isolated, being but about 5 miles from two attractive small towns, Matha and Aulnay, whilst the much larger and lovely town of St. Jean d’Angély is only about 9 miles away.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
CHARENTE MARITIME is an Atlantic coastal region of South West France. It is reputed to be the second sunniest after the Côte d’Azur. The summers are long and the temperatures usually warm from mid April to late October.
A gentle, soft, undulating landscape; fields of sweetcorn, sunflowers, and of course, the many vineyards which produce excellent local wine, and especially the ‘eau de vie’ for the fine Cognac for which this region is famous. The villages, their quaint old cottages of white stone under rich red Roman tiled roofs are a pleasure to amble through. Climbing vines, colourful hollyhocks and flowering shrubs adorn many walls. This then, characterizes the region, along with its friendly people, excellent cuisine and relaxing pace of life. The coastal resorts are well appointed, well cared for, vibrant, and the beaches ideal for all the family. The historic town of La Rochelle has a fine and colourful marina, wonderful waterfront cafes, fantastic seafood, and the heart of the town is made up of narrow cloistered streets, shops and markets. Inland, there is also much to be seen. Cognac is well worth a visit, as is Saintes with its charming streets, Charente river waterfront, and the Roman Amphitheatre.
Visit Futuroscope ( just over an hour away) for a family day out. Above all, the region is one to be explored at a leisurely pace. It is teaming with wildlife; birds which are a rare sight in England, abound here in the summer months. Look from our window and see a hoopoe sitting on our fence. (No promises there as they are quite timid!) Use the many local markets for your fresh produce—the quality is good and its fun finding it!
St Jean d'Angely area
Matha and Aulnay both have a number of excellent bars and restaurants, good supermarkets and swimming pools. St. Jean d’Angély has a major sports centre, many bars, restaurants/cafes, quaint shops, and many historic buildings to see. There are also major supermarkets. The Atlantic coast with its very fine beaches and resorts is only about an hour’s drive away.
How to get there
Flights: cheap flights from Stansted to either La Rochelle or Poitiers, (both approx. one hour's drive). Ferry: From Poole or Portsmouth to St. Malo, Caen or Cherbourg. (shortest drives). Seacat from Dover to Boulogne. (I normally use this as it is so cheap) but is a considerably longer drive. Excellent Autoroutes and main roads.

Guestbook for Old Stable Cottage
Andrew Our holiday was spectacular. The cottage is a work of art---the hamlet is delightful--and France is wonderful. Our ten days at the cottage were the most enjoyable of our trip---the people were delightful, especially your neighbor with the chickens. Everybody, however was warm and welcoming. I marvel at how you have renovated the cottage. Everything is so historically appropriate---the staircase and woodwork magnificent. The tomatoes were wonderful, as were the figs. We ate them daily, though this was my niece's first experience with fresh figs. It had long been a dream to visit rural France and absorb the culture. The cottage afforded this dream coming to fruition. My deepest thanks to you for being so kind and working around our family problems. J L Illinois USA
