The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

In July and August there are many festivals, Bastille Day on the 14th July, local village party's' and barbecues. In Saintes, they have a folklore week where you can see live shows in the Amphitheatre, which are extremely good. They dress up in medieval costumes and sell unusual produce. Royan has a horse show which is from the wild west to sand polo, horse rides and show jumping. Aulnay have a medieval evening as well and Matha has a folklore week.
There are many various lakes and rivers to swim, canoe, kayak, fish and lots lots more. This is really a great area to visit and explore for both Mums and Dads and the children as well.
The one thing you will notice when you cross into France is the low levels of traffic in comparison to the UK. With quiet roads and a low rolling picturesque landscape; what be better than to bring your cycles with you and enjoy the beautiful countryside taking in the wonders of the small unspoilt villages and hamlets or go off road in the forests.

We feel the property description is overstated claiming to sleep/seat 7 and have 2 bathrooms-it actually has only seats for 4 around the small kitchen table, 5 on the sofa/2 chairs and sleeps a maximum of 6 in the 2 bedrooms (both doubles being very small doubles with very hard mattresses so really only suitable for 2 children in together); one bedroom has only a very high velux rooflight which doesn't open so no ventilation. We had a very disappointing stay in August where the only bathroom/shower room there (there are not 2 separate bath/shower rooms in the gite) had a broken Saniflow toilet and we were asked not to use the shower too so had to keep going into the owners house/B&B facilities to use both-not easy with children who need the loo frequently and won't go on their own! The oven didn't work, the pool was out of order some of the time, the bedding/towels weren't changed during our 2 week stay and there was a very bad smell of septic tanks on the patio which made eating al fresco unpleasant. It also offered wifi but this was in the house/B&B next door. The owner next door was sympathetic to the problems but couldn't solve them and we have received a partial refund (not enough to compensate for a spoilt holiday), they haven't addresses our suggestion to amend their description of the gite to avoid others being disappointed too. We reckon this would suit a family of 4-5 happy to do a lot of driving as everything is a fair drive away, if all was working well and the costs were lower. We won't be going back! |
