Sunflower Gite (gite)

Home description

The gite is part of a 300 year old Charentaise farmhouse in the tranquil hamlet of Le Vivier 8km south west of the market town of St. Jean D'Angely. With a panoramic view over open farmland and woods and set well back from the road within a 3000sq. mt. garden it is an ideal place to relax and is perfectly situated as a base to explore the beautiful and historic Charente Maritime. Parking is adjacent to the gite and the terrace looking over the garden is ideal for al fresco eating.

The gite has a double bedroom with en suite shower and WC. Downstairs is the sitting room/kitchen, with cooker, fridge, freezer, electric kettle, china and glassware. Storage is available in our barn for top boxes and bicycles.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

With its own micro-climate the Charente Maritime enjoys more sunshine than anywhere in France, the only exception being the Cote D'Azur. Every holiday activity can be found in the vicinity including golf, fishing, horse-riding, boating and parasailing. Alternatively there are chateaux, vineyards, cognac houses, pineau houses, historic towns, villages, and churches awaiting your visit. At Sunflower gite you have the ideal base for visiting Poitiers, Saintes, Cognac and La Rochelle.

La Rochelle, capital of the Charente Maritime, is forty five minutes away and boasts the largest marina in France. This popular chic town has an infinite variety of shops, restaurants and bars centred around the Old Harbour, which is the hub of the fashionable port.

Saintes, sitting astride the Charente River, is the capital of the local 'Saintonge' region and boasts a Roman amphitheatre and beautiful cathedral. Cognac, home to all the famous Cognac houses is well worth a visit and you can take tours showing how this famous spirit is produced, and of course a free tasting!

St Jean d'Angely / Bignay area

Le Vivier is a hamlet of around a dozen properties, which were once the farm and adjoining houses belonging to the local Chateau. It takes its name from the large village pond which was once used to rear carp as a winter food. The surrounding countryside, dotted with vines and sunflowers is splendid walking and cycling country. The village of Bignay is 1km away and has a beautiful Norman Church and a lively bar/bistro, which also sells bread and is an internet cafe.

Le Vivier is 8km. from the market town of St. Jean D'Angely, whose wealth grew because it was an important stopover for pilgrims on their way to St. James od Compostela in Spain. Some of the houses date back to the 14th century and the cobbled streets and shady squares invite you to relax with a coffee or a drink and join the locals watching the world go by.

Lying astride the river Boutonne, St. Jean has a full range of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, with a bustling twice-weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Full of local produce, the market is the meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

There is a sports centre beside the river with skate boarding, crazy golf, boating and a fabulous indoor swimming complex.

Twenty minutes to the south, the Charente river meanders through picturesque little towns like St. Savinien and Taillebourg where you can hire boats or watch the world go by at a riverside cafe. There are slipways if you have your own boat.

How to get there

Sunflower gite is accessible from all the channel ferry ports. Overnight crossings from Portsmouth allow you an early morning start to arrive at the gite around lunchtime. St. Malo is about 4 1/2 hours away, Caen about 5, Cherbourg and Le Havre about 5.5. The Channel Tunnel is about 8 hours away. There is also a morning 'speed ferry' from Portsmouth in season arriving at Caen at lunchtime.

The area is very well served by airports at La Rochelle (1hr), Poitier (1hr 15min) and Bordeaux (1hr 20min)
La Rochelle has flights by Flybe from Southampton and Birmingham, Ryanair from Stanstead and Easyjet from Gatwick and Bristol. Poitier has Ryanair flights from Stanstead. Bordeaux has Easyjet flights from Luton, BA from Gatwick and Flybe from Southampton, Norwich and Bristol.
