Home description
The house sits at the end of a village road by a ford through a millstream. The stream bounds one side of a garden that runs down to woodland. The surrounds are verdant and peaceful. In summer brilliant blue dragonflies dart above the stream. In winter, wood from the logpiles burns in the fireplace.
Set some 40 minutes from the coast, the property marries the solitude of la France profonde with the glamour of the ile de Rey and the ile d'Oleron and the glory of the Atlantic coastline. To the east is Cognac, with its caves, and to the west is La Rochelle with its seafood restaurants, aquarium and harbour. Holiday in any way you like.
Back of house, deceptively posing as a bungalow (which it isn't)
Jardin. Mill stream to the right.
BBQ. Garden furniture resting.
Manorial dining table, seating thousands.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Saintonge is a small region on the Atlantic coast of France within the administrative region of Poitou-Charentes and the Departement of Charente-Maritime. It derives its name from the ancient Celtic tribe of the Santones who lived in this area, around the city of Saintes; they were known as the Saintongese. The Saintonge was the centre of the French Huguenots. Today, the region is famous for its production of the grapes that are used to produce cognac and Pineau des Charentes. It is also celebrated for its romanesque churches, the most beautiful of which is generally considered to be that at Aulnay, within cycling distance of the property.
St Jean d'Angely / St Pardoult area
St Jean d'Angely is a quiet town that has retained its medieval charm. It is dominated by the ruins of the Abbaye Royale, which was built to house a relic of John the Baptist. The Centre for European Culture was opened in St Jean d'Angely in 1989 (http://www.cceangely.org/).
St Jean d'Angely has a first rate public swimming pool, Atlantis, and there are pools at Aulnay and Loulay. At Aulnay there are public tennis courts that can be booked through the Office de Tourisme. There is a family-friendly go-kart track at St Jean and canoes can be hired on the river. The area is excellent for cycling as it is fairly flat.
There is a gourmet restaurant within walking distance of the property, across the river in the village of Pouzou.
