The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

The Charente Maritime enjoys a micro climate due to the gulf steam hugging the coast. It has more hours of sunshine than anywhere in France other than the Cote D'Azur. Popular with both the French and the English for holidays it retains an old world charm with villages built from local stone dotting the landscape. Once the Romans marched through here leaving an Amphitheatre and triumphal arch in SAINTES, the capital of the region, and for centuries the English and the French fought to call this region their own. This rich agricultural land, full of sunflowers and vineyards, split by two meandering rivers, the Boutonne and the Charente, will lead you down country lanes to discover hidden treasures, ancient churches, riverside restaurants, The coast is just an hour's drive away. Golden beaches, ancient ports and Napoleonic forts (built to stop Nelson's navy from raiding the coast) provide a rich range of venues. The region is famous for its seafood and the local oysters and mussels are considered the best in France.

St Jean d'Angely

Sainte, Cognac and La Rochelle are all within easy reach. Sainte, some thirty minutes away is the capital of the region and bustles with life. Full of beautiful buildings built of mellow stone its cathedral towers over the Charente river where you can hire boats or take a leisurely cruise. Cognac, also nearby, has been made famous the world over by the brandy produced here. A fascinating and historic town most of the distilleries offer guided tours.

La Rochelle is the third most visited town in France. A lovely coastal town full of 17th and 18th century buildings the old port is packed with cafes, bars and restaurants. Pass through the gateway of the Grosse Horloge and wander through a maze of pedestrianised streets.
