There are twice weekly markets, and 6 restaurants within easy walking distance of the house. Days out at the beach are easy - the nearest, Fouras, being only 25 miles away - and the coast offers 4 beautiful islands to explore.

Our house is a quiet retreat to come home to after your days out, with open plan living-dining room on the ground floor, a newly installed well-equipped kitchen, and a sunny yard to the rear (not enclosed, please note).

The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

The house is a good base for exploring this fascinating region –

• Saintes (15 miles) with its huge Roman amphitheatre, and cruise boats that tour the River Charente

• Cognac (20 miles) - visit the distilleries and taste for yourself!

• Rochefort (25 miles)

• Angoulême (40 miles)

• La Rochelle (45 miles)

• The Marais Poitevin (also known as the ‘Venise Verte’), north of Surgères, is a lovely area to explore – go to Coulon & hire a canoe or small boat for a couple of hours to explore this network of tiny canals. Bicycles can also be hired at Coulon if you prefer to stay on dry land.

• Poitiers (60 miles) and Futuroscope are also practical options for days out, with excellent road connections – St. Jean is 2 miles from exit 34 of the A10 motorway

Kids will love:

- Zoorama in the forêt de Chizé (20 miles), the zoo at La Palmyre (50 miles), and the excellent Vallée des Singes (55 miles).

-Saint Savinien (10 miles) has a boating lake just for small children, the Port Miniature, and an outdoor swimming pool for the summer months.

-The Aquarium and Maritime Museum in La Rochelle are both excellent.

Unwind at the beach - the nearest option is Fouras (25 miles). Another good family beach can be found a little further up the coast at Châtelelaillon-Plage. Royan has several possibilities, both in the town and along the coast a few miles either side, either towards St. Palais sur Mer or at St Georges de Didonne.

You can also find lovely beaches on the Ile d’Oléron – a nice one is the Plage des Gatseau at Trojan les Bains because it is sheltered from the Atlantic. Bicycles can be hired to explore the pine forests and the rest of the island right up to the lighthouse on its northern tip – there is a network of safe bicycle tracks– try the bicycle hire shop in the centre of St Trojan.

Fouras is also the departure point for the short, regular pedestrian ferry crossing to Ile d’Aix. This is one of the last few of the Atlantic islands not to have been connected by bridge to the mainland, and is quite charming. You can walk around it in around 3 hours, or cycle (very easy to hire bikes on the island), and have a swim at one of the pretty beaches. The Ile Madame is another even smaller island to explore, reached on foot along a causeway.

The Ile de Ré is also a good option for a day out . It is a lovely place to spend some time, either on the beach, strolling around the villages, or cycling. This is where various French film stars have their holiday homes – we’ve yet to meet any on the beach however!

St Jean d'Angely

In St Jean itself you have the brilliant Atlantys leisure centre - indoor swimming pools to satisfy both kids and serious swimmers. There is a 25 metre competition pool, a shallow pool for play, a long twisty waterchute, and a further very shallow safe play pool for toddlers.

Atlantys is adjacent to the river, and a lake has been created for fishing, canoeing and pedaloes. There is a children's’ playground, crazy golf, areas for ball games, and a park for skateboarders. (A good skate park can also be found in the Jardin Public in Saintes).

A pleasant walk along the banks of the river (pushchair friendly) takes about an hour - we have seen all sorts of wildlife, including otters, along this route.

There is also a tennis club in town and karting track.
