Home description

Bienvenue to my beautiful holiday home in the Charente Maritime.

"treize" is a traditional 19th century charentaise stone cottage, spacious and comfortable - a "home from home" set in safe enclosed gardens in a typical french village, it is suitable for families, groups or couples with plenty to offer all ages and tastes.

The Atlantic Coast beaches are a short drive away, as are the Ile de Re and Ile D'Oleron and La Rochelle, Surgeres, Cognac and Bordeaux are all within easy reach.

treize is bright, spacious and comfortable with much charm and character. treize can be cosy for two, but sleeps up to six adults very comfortably plus two infants.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

Charente-Maritime is said to be the second sunniest department in France after the Cote d'Azur receiving on average 2300 hours of sun a year. The department offers a wealth of differing activities and interests to suit all ages and tastes, from beaches to vineyards and gourmet restaurants to zoos.

Your imagination might be captured by the Roman Ampitheatre at Saintes or Futuroscope at Poitiers. For those who prefer more sporting activities, there are plenty of opportunities for golfing enthusiasts with the nearest course less than 20 mins away, the area is also popular with ramblers and cyclists, and of course La Rochelle is a haven for sailors and home to the largest marina in Europe.

For the gourmets, the area is teeming with cognac and pineau producers who are happy to offer tastings, and treize is well placed to visit some of the most renowned wine producers in the world; there are superb restaurants in the area many with an emphasis on the fantastic local seafood.

Fete de Vin at Bordeaux every other year (2006 / 2008 etc)
Circuit des Ramparts for the vintage car enthusiast every September in Angouleme (45 min drive)
Beaches at Chatelaillon-Plage, Fouras, Royan, La Rochelle and Ile de Re is a must visit!!

St Jean d'Angely / Varaize area

Varaize is a typical french village of approximately 650 inhabitants, nestled amongst vineyards and sunflower fields with a small river running through to the mill race. There is a 14C Roman Church and village green, a tennis court and a small sports field.

Less than a 10 minute drive is the market town of St. Jean D'Angely situated on the banks of the River Boutonne. A medieval town offering a good selection of supermarkets, bars and restaurants and a popular twice weekly market. There is an indoor swimming complex with flumes and pools, and the riverbank area offers volleyball, play area, a small children's pool and of course boating.

Within a thirty minute drive are the towns of Cognac, Saintes, Surgeres and Jonzac to name but a few.

In less than an hour are Angouleme, La Rochelle and Ile de Re, and a little further afield at approximately 1hr 20 mins are Bordeaux, Bergerac, La Palmyre, and the Marais-Poitevin.

How to get there

Treize is easily accessible from all the channel ferry ports, you could start your holiday in style with an overnight boat from Portsmouth to St Malo or Caen with breakfast on board before you commence your onward journey.

St Malo is an easy 4 hour drive, Caen is a little longer at 5 hours and Le Havre and Cherbourg are 5 hours plus. Boulogne, Calais and the Tunnel are approximately 7 hours. The roads are generally quiet and the motorways are "family friendly" with plenty of rest areas along the way. treize is just 10 minutes drive from Junction 34 of the A10 motorway.

Flight options are numerous with car-hire available at all airports. Driving times to treize are approximately 45 mins from La Rochelle, 1hr 15 from Bordeaux, or 1hr 20 from Poitiers.

La Rochelle offers flights with Flybe (from Southampton and Birmingham), Ryanair (from Stansted) and Easyjet (from Bristol starting 21st July 2006). Flights are also available to Bordeaux with Easyjet (from Luton), British Airways (from Gatwick) and Flybe (from Bristol, Norwich and Southampton) and Poitiers has flights from Stanstead (Ryanair).

An alternative would be via the Eurostar and TGV to La Rochelle.

The lounge is a large l-shape with three very comfortable sofas (no hard old sofas here) grouped around a typical french chimney and log fire. There is plenty to entertain with

combined tv/video;
dvd player;
speaker system for laptop or i-pod;
large selection of videos;
numerous board games; and
a very well-stocked library.

The kitchen-dining room leads from the lounge and is a very sociable space, it has large windows overlooking the south-facing front garden and is the perfect place for a long lazy lunch or a cooking marathon with ample worktop space, breakfast bar and a five burner range cooker.

There are three bedrooms, one on the ground floor (king or twin), and two further bedrooms on the upper level floor (one twin and one double).

The rooms are all good sizes (the twin room is slightly smaller than the double/king), and all are well decorated in their own individual style with either wooden or laminate flooring and each has plenty of drawer and hanging space.

All the bathroom/toilet facilities are on the ground floor.

There is a bathroom with bath and overbath shower, with separate loo next door, there is also a newly added "wet-room" which features exposed stonework and has a fantastic double sized shower, loo & sink.

Further details outdoors:
The gardens are spacious with plenty of areas for sunbathing or shade depending on your requirements and are private and fully enclosed offering a safe environment for children.

There is a good sized front garden with a table and chairs - a great place for an al-fresco breakfast.

The rear garden has another eating area with a large table that easily seats 8 under a gazebo.

There is also plenty of room for playing games.

Sun-worshippers will find a number of loungers dotted around, or if you don't fancy sunbathing, you could sit under the mature cherry tree and relax in the shade.
