The West Country / Cornwall region
Cornwall must surely be any holidaymaker's dream location. Not only does it enjoy the mildest of climates, but the further west you travel, the more unspoilt and spectacular the scenery becomes. The west of Cornwall is a haven for walkers with miles of coastal path to explore. There is even a footpath, St Michael's Way, which crosses the country from St Uny Church, near to Carbis Bay, to St Michael's Mount on the south coast. St Michael's Mount, a medieval castle sitting astride a tranquil island, is definitely worth a visit, as is the open air Minack Theatre at Porthcurno, 30 minutes drive from St Ives, in its spectacular location overlooking the sea.
Cornwall is famous for its wealth of mining heritage sites and not far from St Ives is Geevor tin mine, the largest mining history site in the UK. There is an ever expanding network of mineral tramways being made accessible to the walker, cyclist and horse rider. One of the best known of these is the coast to coast cycling trail which links the historic mining harbours of Portreath on the north coast and Devoran on the south coast. There are RSPB reserves close by at Hayle Estuary and a short drive away at Marazion Marsh. With the most glorious, sandy beaches and attractions such as the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth and the National Trust's Trengwainton Garden near Penzance, West Cornwall has something for everyone.
Geniessen Sie unsere Ferienwohnung in "Rosamunde-Pilcher-Country". In Rosamunde Pilchers Roman 'Die Muschelsucher' ('The Shell Seekers') hat die Heldin Penelope ihre Kindheit in St Ives verbracht. (Translation - Penelope, the heroine of the novel 'The Shell Seekers', spent her childhood in St Ives.)
St Ives / Carbis Bay area
Carbis Bay and St Ives have become year round resorts due to the beautifully mild climate and the range of activities which are available at any time of year. Within walking distance of your apartment in Carbis Bay there are a number of quality restaurants and hotels, a bank, chemist, newsagents and Tesco supermarket. By choosing to stay in Carbis Bay you will enjoy very easy access to all the attractions of St Ives, without having any parking worries. In St Ives itself many self catering holiday properties require holidaymakers to use the public car parks whereas at Shellseekers you will have the benefit of your own parking space.
Carbis Bay beach with its azure blue sea and fine sand is perfect for a stroll and for major sandcastle construction projects. The expansive Porth Kidney Sands can be reached at low tide by walking around Hawkes Point in the direction of Hayle. The neighbouring golden beaches of St Ives are ideal for swimming, surfing, sailing and fishing. From the working harbour there are boat trips to Seal Island and numerous fishing trips.
Art lovers will find it difficult to decide which of the many galleries and exhibitions to visit first. Tate St Ives, presenting changing displays of twentieth century art, stands impressively above Porthmeor beach. Equally popular is the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden which is only a short walk away. Many other galleries located in St Ives showcase the work of locally based artists.
There is a very wide selection of top class restaurants in St Ives and one of the pleasures of a holiday here is checking out other holidaymakers' recommendations. For golf enthusiasts the West Cornwall Golf Club, Cornwall's oldest course, overlooking Porth Kidney Sands, is only a short walk/drive from your apartment at Carbis Bay.
During the quieter months, when the skies are just as blue but the beaches regain their tranquility, visitors to St Ives can enjoy dramatic walks followed by excellent cuisine. The St Ives September Festival, a festival of music and the Arts, takes place annually. Every year its programme includes talks, films, poetry, jazz, classical, rock and folk music. As Christmas approaches late night shopping in St Ives (surely less stressful than London's Oxford Street!) can be linked with a visit to the famous Mousehole Christmas lights on the south coast. The New Year's Eve celebrations in St Ives have a national reputation with the whole of the harbour front being closed to traffic, and the festivities being followed by a dramatic firework display.
