The West Country / Cornwall region
A PLACE OF DREAMS This is St. Ives, one of the most famous holiday towns in Cornwall - a jewel situated at the south-western tip of this island kingdom yet readily accessible by road, rail and air. Crystal blue waters, the surf, the golden sands, year round sub-tropical temperatures and the warmth of the local welcome. Today, as for centuries before, life centres around the harbour where fishing boats still moor alongside granite piers, their catch being sent around the world and earning an enviable reputation for its quality and variety in some of the finest restaurants. As well as its tradition of fishing, St. Ives is world famous as an art centre and studios, shops and galleries are everywhere. The Tate St. Ives, part of the Tate Gallery in London, was opened in 1993 and is, perhaps, the flagship of Cornish art.
The Gallery's inspirational building stands high above the magnificent surfing beach of Porthmeor and features exhibitions which represent the modern 'St. Ives School' of painters such as Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Sir Terry Frost as well as a changing programme of other contemporary work.
St Ives area
Everything in St Ives is accessible on foot. Household provisions, fruit and vegetables, and essentially, the fishmongers - all within walking distance as is the local Cornish deli (in Fore Street). Closer is the corner shop known as 'Norways'. Stroll around 'downlong', the old fisherman's quarter, to the 'Island', a grassy peninusula with a chapel on top. Hidden in its lee is Porthgwidden beach, perfect for paddling. Walk north along the rocky shore toward the open sea where generations of children have enjoyed crabbing at low tide among boulders. Buy an original work of art from the New Millenium Gallery (Street-an-Pol opp. the tourist office) specialises in abstract and landscape inspired paintings. Other good galleries are the Belgrave and Wills Lane (both off Fore St) the Porthminster Gallery (Fernlea Terr) the Salthouse (Norway Sq) and St Ives Ceramics (Fish St). Shoes at Jan Jansen in Fish St are quite simply works of art in leather! Designer jewellery at the Trelyon Gallery, and whacky homewares at Calico. Have dinner at the Porthminster Beach Cafe (01736 795352 indoor and outdoor dining from a small imaginative menu of fish and meat dishes in unpretentious surroundings. Other good choices are Alba (01736 797222) fine dining on the first floor of the old lifeboat house on the wharf, and St Andrews Bistro (01736 797074) no sea view but fabulous north african influenced cooking. Best of all the most delicious 'real' hamburgers imaginable! Stay up late at Isobar, nightclub for the young crowd; oldies stroll along Porthminster Beach to watch the moon rise! Banks, restaurants, bars, cafes, jazz, football club skate board park, and wet suit hire for surfers. Of note is Tate Gallery St Ives and the famous Barbara Hepworth Museum. recover at the Porthmeor Beach Cafe (01736 795352) over croissants and coffee whilst booking 2 hr lesson with the St Ives Surf School (07792 261278) £25 inc.
The main A30 runs from Exeter to Penzance. At Lelant just west of Hayle take the A3074 to St. Ives. Immediately after Carbis Bay watch for the Tregenna Castle signs on the left hand side. Just past the entrance to the Tregenna Castle Hotel on the left there is a fork in the road, take the left hand fork (signposted to the Leisure centre). After approx 300 metres there is a sharp bend to the left which is steeply inclined. Just as you start to round this bend, Pednolver Terrace is located directly on to your right. Immediately take the first turn on the right down an unmade road, down the back of the Terrace. No. 3 is third house down on the right. There are 3 parking spaces with the property (more parking by arrangement) and numerous public car parks in the vicinity. Please note, Pednolver Terrace does not appear on maps, if using sat/nav look for Talland Road, St. Ives TR26.
By Train: Regular Intercity Services running to Penzance stop at St. Erth station, and from there a frequent (approx every half hour) local service runs along the three mile scenic branchline to St. Ives. You will see a no entry road opposite, short walk to top of road; Pednolver Terrace is in front of you at the top and No.3 is slightly to the left at top of hill.
By Bus: from terminal turn left up the hill, with sea to your left, walk along The Terrace until you see a no entry road on the right. Short walk to top of road, Pednolver Terrace is in front of you at the top and No.3 is slightly to the left at top of hill (see picture below of front of property).
