The Cornwall region
St Ives - The jewel in the West Cornwall crown... loved for its superb beaches, narrow streets and flower-filled courtyards, its glittering sea and clear air and for its friendly hospitable people.
The beaches of St Ives are its crowning glories. Magnificent Porthmeor Beach on the town's western edge is famous for powerful surf, yet is ideal for non-surfers of all ages. The more sheltered Porthminster Beach on the town's eastern edge has perfect conditions for family groups.
Fishing no longer dominates the quays, but boats still fill the harbour and Smeaton's Pier is still the preserve of the town's fishing community. Fish are landed, nets mended and the spirit of Old St Ives is still tangible. The town's colourful heritage is distilled not only in its physical character but in great artistic traditions dating back to the 19th century when accomplished painters revelled in the clear accurate light, luminous colours and the vivid imagery of place and people - an artistic legacy exhibited in the splendid Tate Gallery above Porthmeor.
Add to all this a range of excellent restaurants and cafes which cater for all tastes, traditional pubs, entertainment for all ages, a modern cinema and a lively, friendly atmosphere and St. Ives becomes even more of a holiday delight.
The September Festival brings a feast of music, literature, theatre and art. Breton markets line the harbour in the Summer and the Square Sail Fleet are often present. Throughout the season enjoy floral displays that have won more National and Regional wins and placings in Britain in Bloom than anywhere else in the UK.
A marvellously scenic branch railway line follows the coast here on its way between Penzance and St Ives.
Mermaid House is perfectly situated for those seeking comfortable accommodation and close proximity to the bustle of nearby towns.
St Ives is a Mecca for artists and restaurant lovers. Nearby Penzance offers the convenience of a larger town and the city of Truro with its historic cathedral, top restaurants, bars and shops is just 25 minutes away.
The surrounding area offers an abundance of activities, including scenic walks, beautiful fishing spots, woodlands, an ancient church, surf-beaches, a selection of local pubs and a Golf Course.

"Excellent place to stay in St Ives"
We stayed at Mermaid House for a week in May. We have stayed in many places in St Ives and Mermaid is at the top of the list as a great place to stay The house was spotless and has everything we needed. I would recommend the house for couples, extended family and families. We look forward to returning.
Thank you so much for your kind words and the way you looked after Mermaid whilst in St Ives. We appreciate the calibre of guest you were and hope we can welcome you back to Mermaid again sometime! Kind regards Denise

"An experience not to be missed"
We celebrated our Ruby Anniversary during our stay with our family. Mermaid House was the ideal place to stay as it had everything you would need and more. The garden was an added bonus as the weather was exceptional with wall to wall sunshine every day. The furnishings were spotlessly clean as was everything else in Mermaid House. The kitchen was equipped with everything you would need. Especially with our baby granddaughter the washing machine was a boon. The location was ideal as it was just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Mermaid. You were wonderful guests and as we too are celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary this year, we are thrilled you chose to spend it at Mermaid with your family. Kind regards to you all.

"BEST NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS EVER!"
We rented Mermaid for the New Year as we had heard St Ives is the best place to celebrate New Year. The town comes alive and is a huge fancy dress celebration. We dressed as bananas - all six of us with a baby monkey! The evening was dry and we were able to walk into town - parking is difficult on New Year's Eve!! Everyone was friendly - exchanging comments on outfits and generally the atmosphere was Family Friendly. The fireworks over the harbour as New Year hit were tremendous - enhanced by their reflection on the sea! The rain arrived before we left for home but we'd had a fantastic time - and the banana outfits kept us dry. Mermaid is a wonderful place to stay. We were able to play New Year's Eve family games and have fun before we left for town. There is plenty of room for everyone, excellent facilities in the kitchen for cooking, and plenty of parking. The layout of the bedrooms, ie one twin, one double and a family sized bathroom downstairs means that if you come with grandparents or other family members there is privacy between the upstairs double en-suite room and the downstairs. We really liked this! This will not be the last time we stay at Mermaid House to celebrate New Year in St Ives!
Thank you so much for your comments. We, too, have enjoyed many wonderful New Year Eve's in St Ives. It's pretty unique! We look forward to welcoming you back if you decide to return!

"Outstanding cant wait to go back"
Everything about our vist to the Mermaid House was first class from our initial contact with the owners to the day we left. The property is a gorgeous well appointed house. Throughout there is information posted on how to operate appliances, where to shop, where to visit and other nice to know tid bits. We visited with four adults and the separation of the bedrooms gave a a sense of our own space if we needed it. The house is clearly loved and well looked after. The surrounding countryside is stunning to say the least. We really enjoyed exploring the area on foot but older or mobilty challanged visistors would benefit from a vehicle. Parking is ample and is not an issue. We would highly reccommend the Mermaid House and have already started making plans to return next year for an even longer visit.
Wonderful to welcome Canadian guests! Bless you for your wonderful review. We appreciate you mentioning about the configuration of the bedrooms as it is two defined sections in the one property - and hard to explain. Our manager was thrilled with the spotless condition you left Mermaid in and we thank you for looking after her! We can't wait for you to return if your plans allow! Kind regards Denise

"A home away from home!"
Mermaid House was a perfect home base for us during our stay in Cornwall. We knew we'd be driving in and out of St.Ives daily to explore greater Cornwall so Mermaid House was in the ideal location for us, not to mention it had great parking spaces available. It is a bit of a hike down to the beach at St.Ives, but we didn't mind the exercise and if need be just a short taxi ride, It was great to have two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs (basement) and a bedroom with ensuite upstairs so that my Mum could be up and getting ready without disturbing us sleepy heads downstairs. The kitchen was fully equipped for us to cook even a leg of lamb and all the trimmings for our Sunday dinner. The living and dining area was very comfortable and the entire house clean and decorated in a very tasteful fashion. The kids have already been asking to return to Mermaid House!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We were delighted you opted to stay at Mermaid and enjoyed your stay - Muswell the Seagull was thrilled too; he loves having children stay!!! You managed to see so much in your time - we were very impressed. Take care. Kind regards Denise

A lovely apartment. Very high standard of cleanliness. Denise had covered every question in the information pack and the house had everything you needed for a relaxing week away. Excellent service provided by Denise. A bit of a walk back up from St Ives - but good for walking off the food!

"A great family holiday base in St Ives"
This was a fantastic base for our annual trip to Cornwall. We love St Ives and have been doing this for nearly 20 years. We pick a different cottage each year but have already re-booked Mermaid for two weeks next summer. The 3 bedrooms and ample other space, including garden and space for 3 cars to park, were ideal for us with our two grown up offspring and their partners. The quality of the accomodation is excellent and it was great to get all bedding and towels provided. welcome gifts are also a nice touch. The house is a bit of a walk to the beach but it is within walking distance. its easy downhill and an inexpensive taxi trip up hill if you're feeling lazy. St Ives is spectacular of course. If you haven't already visited you've been missing out and the weather this year (never guaranteed of course!) was as hot as the Med. The owners are friendly and helpful and clearly care about the experience you have.

This was our third stay at Mermaid & most definitely won't be our last, it feels more like home every time we go. Okay, so maybe it's a little further out of St Ives than would be completely ideal, but it has ample parking, a garden and you can still (just about) see the sea! We always find it is the little touches which make Mermaid so special - the inclusion of welcome packs for the children is just lovely - and Denise is always so thoughtful - the house is very child friendly. This year we were asked to be honest about any faults we felt needed mentioning, so we have duly racked our brains and the best we could come up with is that the big plates in the kitchen don't fit in the dishwasher, otherwise we have to say (for us at least) it is perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mermaid, of all the places we have stayed in St Ives (& there have been many over the years) it is without doubt the best.
Mermaid is always happy under "your watch"!! We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Warm Regards Denise

"Wonderful, beautiful house in great location."
First time to St Ives with our three children aged 2,12 and 15. Great time had by all! We loved Mermaid house, it was like home from home with everything we could have needed. It was light and airy, a great safe space for toddler to play and room for teenagers to escape downstairs! We took bikes, plenty of space to store in the garage, took about 3 minutes to cycle down into St Ives, great not to have to worry about parking, then took about 15 minutes and a lot of leg power to cycle back up the hill again! Denise was very helpful and we would certainly like to return to Mermaid House for another holiday very soon.

"Excellent apartment - the photos don't do it justice!"
Very spacious and extremely well equipped house - it's called an apartment, but is on two levels, with 3 bedrooms! There are 2 bathrooms (1 ensuite) and 3 toilets, so ideal for extended family or large groups. Within walking distance of St Ives town, takes about 15 to 20 minutes - going down is easy, but coming back is up hill, so you may need to get a taxi! Taxi drivers are friendly and helpful and the trip costs around £4.50. You wouldn't want to drive!!! The roads are very narrow and car parks are just as far as the apartment! There is a Co-op only 5 minutes walk away, which is reasonably priced and fairly well equipped and a Tesco about 10 minutes drive out of town. We loved lots about this house, but we especially liked the outdoor space, which has some sun all day through to tea time. We stayed in height of the season and the town was very busy and it is best to book a table for dinner, as we found on a couple of occasions it was difficut to get in anywhere. There are lots of fish and chip shops, as well as pasty/pie bakeries. One of the best places we ate was the Lifeboat Inn - we turned up as a party of 10 and even though they were extremely busy, they managed to move things around to accomodate. Food was good too. Travelling was a bit of nightmare and if we did it again we would travel through the night. Journey took 7 hours to get there (from Midlands) and 9 hours to get back, but friends of ours travelled through night and did it in 4 hours!
