Enquire nowThe West Country / Cornwall region
There are lots of things to do and see in West Cornwall and St Ives makes a great base from which to explore. The South West Coast Path offers some wonderfully scenic walks and meanders along some of the most beautiful coastline in the United Kingdom. Walkers can also head inland and explore ancient Cornwall with its Bronze Age stone circles, Iron Age villages and Neolithic dolmens such as Zennor Quoit.
There are a multitude of galleries to visit, including the TATE Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden in St Ives.
Lands End is a tourist attraction which is based on the picturesque natural landscape.
Marazion is reputed to be the oldest town in Cornwall with historical connections to the ancient tin trade and wonderful views of St Michaels Mount (NT).
The Minack Open Air Theatre is a unique 750 seat theatre carved into the cliffside with stunning views over Porthcurno, one of the great beaches of Cornwall (or anywhere in the world). The exhibition centre tells the story of Rowena Cade who built the theatre. The villages of Lamorna, Lelant and Mousehole, to name but a few, also make a delightful day out. There are also several gardens which offer visitors lovely walks such as Trengwainton Gardens (NT) in nearby Penzance.
For children there are many attractions for a fun day out. Flambards Experience in Falmouth offers an exciting day out with the best thrill rides in Cornwall plus live entertainment and attractions such as wildlife, Space Quest, Victorian Village and Britain in the Blitz. Paradise Park in Hayle has wildlife attractions and a good play centre with adventure slides for adults and children to enjoy.
St Ives is blessed with some very fine restaurants offering local produce and in particular, locally caught fish and seafood, as well as sublime views of the harbour.
The St Ives / Carbis Bay area
St Ives has it all - fabulous beaches with soft, pale sand and calm turquoise seas, narrow cobbled streets, flower filled courtyards, award winning gardens, and all the character of a lovely Cornish fishing harbour.
The area is famous for its beautiful light which has drawn many artists to establish themselves in the town. There are many galleries including the famous Tate St Ives. There is a wide range of restaurants and pubs offering all types of cuisine, especially the wonderful freshly caught seafood and fabulous just baked, authentic Cornish Pasty. The atmosphere in the town is a vibrant and colourful combination of traditional fishing harbour and contemporary, youthful surf scene. St Ives appeals to visitors of all ages.
About a mile along the coast from St Ives lies the quiet village of Carbis Bay. The village has a beautiful beach popular with families and offers a more sedate and spacious setting for a holiday with ample parking, shops and amenities. Carbis Bay affords visitors easy access to St Ives via the quaint three minute train ride. Visitors young and old love the train journey with its beautiful views out to sea.
Alternatively, for those who wish to enjoy the stunning surroundings at a more sedate pace, a twenty minute stroll along the pretty coastal path from Carbis Bay brings you to Porthminster Beach in St Ives. We recommend following this fabulous walk with a traditional Cornish Cream Tea!
