The West Country region
Cornwall is defined by its spectacular coastline and has so much to offer. Families looking to paddle and build sandcastles will be spoilt for choice of golden beaches. Wander the charming little streets around its sleepy fishing villages,or indulge in a clotted cream tea. Inland, hauntingly beautiful moors give way to gentle hills dotted with sheep, and due to the mild climate, there are always flowers in bloom, whatever the season.
There are many fascinating all-weather tourist attractions to interest all ages, such as the Eden Project, Land’s End, St Michael’s Mount and several theme parks, such as Flambards, near Helston. You can learn about the county’s history of tin-mining at the Poldark mine, or look to the future at Goonhilly Satellite station. With several animal parks and National Trust houses and gardens too, Cornwall really does have something for everyone!
St Ives is, quite simply, gorgeous! Artists have flocked here for many years to capture the light and exquisite charm of the little granite cottages huddled around the harbour. Now, visitors can see the fruits of their labours at the Tate Gallery overlooking Porthmeor beach, which is popular with surfers. Families can enjoy safe bathing at Porthminster beach, and wonderful rock pools on Porthgwidden beach. Five minutes' drive from the property is Carbis Bay beach, a little quieter but just as pretty, and there is also the huge sweep of sand stretching from Hayle to Gwithian.
The town has acquired something of a reputation for good food and there are many excellent restaurants to suit all budgets, not to mention delicious Cornish pasties and fudge on sale around the harbour! You can learn about the town’s fascinating history at the St Ives Museum, and explore the narrow cobbled streets, which offer great shopping and art galleries.
Apart from the beautiful coastal walks, many other activities such as horse riding, golf, go-karting, and laser quest can be enjoyed in the area, and St Ives has become a year-round destination. In September, the St Ives Festival holds many musical and cultural events, while the town has become extremely popular for good-natured revelry in fancy dress on New Year's Eve.
