The Loire Valley region
The Loire Valley region
Situated between southern Normandy and the lower stretches of the Loire valley, Mayenne represents real French countryside. A haven of forests and hills through which farmers have watched conflicts over the centuries. The Mayenne river attracts both boaters and anglers alike and divides the department from north to south. Its 85 kms of towpaths are used by both cyclists and walkers The capital Laval boasts an 11th century chateau, originally home to the barons and counts of Laval untill 1794. Le Mans is famous for it's annual 24 hour endurance race and colourful lights display in the summertime
St Hilaire du Harcouet
St Hilaire du Harcouet
St Hilaire du Harcouet is only 10 mins away from the cottage. Weekly livestock markets every Wednesday morning in front of the twin towered church are a delight for visiting children.Trays of baby ducklings and chicks are at just the right height for little eyes. It is possible to hire a pony and trap from the same square during the summer tourist season.
Across the main road is the weekly produce market where a delicious array of fresh delights await the discerning customer. The area is famous for it's beef, cream and cider. Indeed many of the local restaurants use these ingredients to provide good value meals and snacks. Most visitors enjoy a coffee and pastry and a chance to watch the world go by during their visit.
Visitors of ten and under will enjoy a visit to Jouet a toy store situated on the by-pass around St Hilaire du Harcouet.Next door to which is an excellent craft centre Cassiope.
From the square with the twin towered church it is a short walk to the park housing an artifical beach and two lakes surrounded by wildlife.
20 mins along the main road towards Domfront will bring you to St Frambault. This enchanting village won the prize for the prettiest floral village in France for several years running. There are numerous displays of flowers and bedding plants. Visit the little primary school gardens and see the latest generation being taught how to preserve their beautiful village. Wander down to the lake surrounded by flowers. Saunter along the banks to the little cafe where you can hire a pedalo for a leisurely trip around the lake accompanied by the local families of mallard ducks.
In the nearby village of Fougerolles du Plessis you can enjoy a three course lunch with wine for less than 10 euros at the Coeur de Lion followed by a round of miniature golf.
From spring onwards, villages in France have diverse activities such as fetes and car boot sales. Indeed it is a rare weekend that there is not one or both going on nearby. Every summer our neighbouring village of Savigny holds a medieval evening commemorating the opening of the Abbey there in Medieval times.
Our village of Landivy, just half a kilometer away has two bakers, a small supermarket, butchers, chemist, bar / tabac and two hairdressers. A large supermarket is just 6 mins away by car.
