About this location
The Basse-Normandie region
This beautiful area of France offers so much to the holiday maker. At the bottom of the Cotentin Peninsula and just on the edge of Brittany and Normandy, Mont St Michel is approximately 35 kms away and the lovely medieval town of Fougeres is just under 20 minutes by car.
Normandy is steeped in tradition and history and our guests always enjoy their visits to the Bayeux tapestry (about 1.5 hours drive), the lovely town of Avranches and the pretty coast.
The D-day landing beaches are within 1 - 2 hours drive and offer you the opportunity to explore the most incredible history of the war. The Cemeteries makes for an emotional visit and the Museums are full of information and you will feel part of the history. Nearer to La Hantraye, about 10km by car, is an American Cemetery which is on the edge of the pretty town of St James. The atmosphere is so peaceful and the cemetery is beautifully cared for.
The sea port of St Malo and the medieval town of Dinan are a wonderful day out and if you like sea food the small town of Cancale must definetly be on your list.
Within the town of St Hilaire there are lots of restaurants and bars and most weeks there is a concert or cycle race. The town is very welcoming and the locals are always delighted to have visitors join in their celebrations.
The town of St Hilaire du Harcouet is 3kms from La Hantraye and offers a wide range of shops and restaurants. On Wednesday morning the town hosts a huge market with the opportunity to try and buy and large variety of local produce including cheeses, cider, wine and garlic. Nobody can resist the delicious sausages wrapped in a galette or freshly prepared crepes. You can sit and enjoy a coffee and watch the locals buying chickens and ducks and even the odd ferret!
For something a little different we suggest a visit to Domaine du Coquerel, the 3rd largest producer of Calvados in France. You can go and see around the Caves and have a guided tour in English and get to sample the calvados but do ask us to phone to confirm the times of tours in the right language. Milly is about 4kms from St Hilaire du Harcouet.
About 20 minutes from the house is the village of Pontmain. A tiny village with an enormous Basilica built after children saw the Virgin Mary in the night sky in January 1871. The Basilica is stunning, you can just wander in, admire the lovely stained glass windows and enjoy the atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
Villedieu les Poeles is about 30 minutes by car and is famous for copper pots and pans made in the local foundry. There is also a bell foundry and an excellent museum in this very pretty town. The market is excellent on Tuesday.
