Home description
In the school holiday season this is a wonderful area for family holidays. However in the early and late summer the region takes on a different charm. The roads are even quieter and the restaurants and shops are especially pleased to see you. And of course, flights are very cheap particularly in mid-week.
La Renaudrie provides a peaceful haven for those who wish to explore the area, sample the excellent sea food restaurants in Royan and investigate the liquid delights of Cognac, St Emillion and the Medoc. Not forgetting the cultural life in Saintes and Bordeaux.
The house is in a tiny, rural hamlet; there are only four other houses nearby, on a road that averages about one car every five minutes. St Ciers du Taillon selling bread, wine and basic supplies is five minutes away (by car) and the supermarket and shops in Mirambeau is ten minutes distant.
The house and pool, the shallow end is in the foreground.
The sitting room is ideal for relaxing with TV/DVD player, CD and iPod speakers.
The light and airy master bedroom.
En-suite to master bedroom, the walk-in shower is out of shot.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente-Maritime on the south west coast of France enjoys the long hot summers and mild winters so necessary for the production of the fine grapes used make wonderful wines and cognac. Located with the Atlantic to the west with its 200km of coastline, the Charente and Dordogne to the east and the Gironde to the south, the Charente-Maritime is a magnificent and exceptional part of France. This is a quiet agricultural area, with vineyards and fields growing sunflower, wheat and maize, yet close to the sea.
The population density for the Charente Maritime is on a par with Cumbria – England’s least populous county – for those used to Britain’s congested roads the comparative peace of rural French roads makes driving a pleasure again. Royan, 40 minutes to the west of La Renaudrie, is a popular holiday destination for the French who enjoy the excellent beaches and appreciate the local oysters, mussels and freshly caught fish. All the local restaurants have excellent fresh fish dishes. A visit to the morning fish market in Royan is a pleasurable education!
The local vineyards are famous for their production of Cognac. Pineau des Charentes, the local aperitif, is a blend of Cognac and grape juice and delicious when served cold. There are many local tiny wineries and distilleries where one can taste and buy wine, Cognac and Pineau directly from the producers. Our local vinyard will arrange tastings. La Renaudrie is 40 minutes away from Cognac, an interesting town to visit. We are also 45 minutes from wonderful St. Emilion and about an hour from Bordeaux. The nearby world-famous wine region of Medoc is worth visiting as are the nearer Cotes de Bourg and Cotes de Blaye.
St Hilaire du Bois / Mirambeau area
Mirambeau, is about ten minutes away and is the nearest town, it boasts a Super U supermarket, a wonderful boulangerie (Lannuzel), two hairdressers plus a range of other shops. It has a Saturday morning market and a fair on the last Saturday of the month.
Royan is one of the most prestigious seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast, a favourite with the French. Rebuilt since the Second World War, it has a fifties charm and ultra smart beaches. To the west of Royan is 'Zoo de La Palmyre' the most visited tourist attraction in the Charente-Maritime. This is a breeding zoo, with an emphasis on conservation, so leaving many of the 1,600 animals free to roam.
The nearest village to La Renaudrie is St Ciers-du-Taillon. There is a small supermarket; the village also has a boulangerie, charcuterie, wine merchants and excellent chemist/pharmacist.
How to get there
Calais is 790kms away which is possible to drive in 8 hours. St. Malo is 470kms away and about 4.75 hours away. La Rochelle airport is about 1.15 hours away by car, there is a choice of car rentals (don't book the car rental that your airline suggests as everybody else on your flight will have done the same). Bordeaux airport is good for international flights and is just over an hour away by car, there is a choice of car rentals. Angouleme airport has opened and is about the same distance awauy as La Rochelle. We have flown into Poitiers airport (two hours away) when we could not get a flight into La Rochelle.

Further details indoors: Local craftsmen, who worked to high standards, undertook the renovation of the house. All the shutters have been replaced and the new, wooden shutters are of the traditional Charentais design. Upstairs all the double-glazed windows have an integrated mosquito screen; so cool, fresh air at night comes without the irritating whine of a midnight mozzie! Three of the bedrooms have en suite shower, or bath rooms. There is also a separate large bathroom on the ground floor.
Downstairs is light and airy. The kitchen, dining area and sitting room are combined into one comfortable space. The kitchen is recently installed and the electrics are mainly Bosch.
A separate walk-in tiled pantry keeps food cool and the utility room off the kitchen is the washing and drying area for wet swimming costumes and towels. Also on the ground floor is one of the double bedrooms and the family bathroom.
The whole house is well insulated, keeping it warm in winter. Heating downstairs is under floor and the radiators upstairs are run of an electrically heated boiler.
The games room in the former dairy has pool and football tables. Table tennis is in an open barn. There is a good supply of DVDs, CDs, books and board games.
Further details outdoors: The garden has well established fig and cherry trees and has plenty for children to do with a 14' trampoline, a swing/slide/climbing frame and a Wendy House.
The 11m x 6m L-shaped pool has been designed for family holidays, open for the first time this summer. The large shallow area makes up half of the pool and is accessed by wide, easily negotiable steps. The pool then slopes to the deep end, to give competent swimmers the opportunity to play too!
The pool is in a fenced area and equipped with an alarm so as to give you peace of mind. It is set by a fig tree and has wonderful views across the vines and fields of sunflowers. The paved area around the pool is excellent for sunbathing, or relaxing with a drink and watching the sun go down.
There is a movable BBQ.

We have been in many parts of France in rented accommodation over the years and this property far surpasses them all.
We all enjoyed very much this very splendid home and consistently admired and were extremely impressed with the attention to detail in every single aspect of which the list would be endless!!
