The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

La Tavellerie is in the Vendee Bocage. This is a hilly, wooded area and because it is unsuitable for huge fields and business farming methods, it has retained the charm of the traditional French countryside. The climate is reputedly the second best in France after the South of France. The summers are hot but not stiflingly so, and the winters mild on account of the gulf stream hitting the coast near by. It is suitable for those looking for tranquility and pleasant walks. The area is famous as a centre of the counter revolution in France. There are many interesting historical sites in the area which are well managed and make an excellent day out. Within view of La Tavellerie is the Medieval Dongon at Bazoges-en-Pareds (about 2 kilometers away), where there is a Medieval garden, a museum and a good restaurant. The coast and fine beaches are an hour plus away. THe chateau of the Loire make for a good day's outing. La Rochelle, an interesting, historic harbour town, with excellent sea food, is an hour and a quarter away, as is the famous Ile de Re.

St Hilaire du Bois area

Fontenay le Comte is the old capital of the area and is full of old buildings, interesting walkways, a chateau and a museum. The market on Saturdays is excellent. The Marais Poitevin with its quiet canals and little villages is about an hour away. In the summer there are special events in many old towns and Abbeys. THe area of Vouvant half an hour away is famous for its forests and lakes. The local cuisine is good and inexpensive. La Cailler, about 3 kilometers away is a charming village and has the basic shops, an excellent butcher, Spar etc. There are lots of walks marked out in the woods in the area.

Further details indoors:
The pleasure of the house is that it is light, comfortable and spacious. It is also completely private. There is some antique furniture. The kichen is huge with a long table specially made for it in the traditional style of the area. A large en suite bathroom is in the process of being built onto the downstairs bedroom (Autumn 2007). The living room has two sofas, chairs and a piano which is tuned annually. There are outside spaces for all weathers. The huge semi-circular stone paved terrace traps the sun and heat, and if it is baking hot there are trees, table and chairs and a swing seat on the other side. There is ample room in the gravelled courtyard for cars to park and turn. There is a paved area with loungers around the pool.

Further details outdoors:
There's lots of garden furniture -a table and chairs on the terrace and another under the trees. Loungers at the pool and a bench. And a swing seat. Ropes and swings for the children hang from a tree. Children love playing in the little forest across a field which is not big enough to get lost in but is where camps, houses and so on can be made and adventurous games devised.

Further details

The property is entirely private. 7 acres, house, pool and forest are solely for the use of the tennant.

Conditions

Heating of the swimming pool is not included in the rent. There is an efficient pool heater that runs off the boiler but it does take a lot of fuel. It comes out at approximately £15 per day. For the most part the pool is warm enough but should a tennant want heating, it is available. Extra cleaning is available at 30 Euros per 3 hours.
