The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The Vendee is arguably one of Frances best kept secrets. Superb climate, miles of sandy coastline, beautiful churches, abbeys, chateau, fishing harbours, forests and a range of outdoor and sporting activities makes this an ideal holiday destination.
The beautiful, bustling coastal holiday towns of St. Gilles- Croix-de Vie, Les Sables-D’Olonne and St Jean de Monts are within easy reach of Dolbeau and are perfect for those in search of activity, people, restaurants, bars and clubs. Life away from the coastal pace is more relaxed as you wind down twisting lanes and through old villages, separated only by the vivid greens, yellows and browns of farmers fields.
St Gilles Croix de Vie
Dolbeau is situated between the villages of Coex and Commequiers and only 14kms from the picturesque fishing port of St. Gilles-Croix de Vie. It is the river Vie that passes along the front of Les Logis de Dolbeau.
Pedal the unique Velo Rail which passes through Dolbeau between the two villages, walk or cycle the 100 kms of dedicated paths that cross the immediate area. Picnic, fish or hire boats on the nearby Lac du January or beneath the 13th Century Chateau of Apremont. Crossing the Gois at low tide between the main land and the island of Noirmoutier is a unique experience just under an hour away.
Travel by boat to Ile d’Yeu and hire bikes to explore its white sandy beaches. Within 10 kms is an 18 hole golf course, Golf des Fontenelles with several others within a 30km radius. Swimming, surfing and other water sports are available at many of the local beaches. Or just spend the day at home with a good book and a glass of local wine.

We arrived at the cottage on the Saturday afternoon and as arranged the keys were left in a designated place for us.When we entered the cottage it was dark and a very bad smell of damp. We managed to … More
We have been renting this property out since 2009 and have never received any negative feedback. In fact the clients who rented the property in early May were so pleased with the property they requested to stay longer. The clients who followed after them also had only positive reviews for us.
I contacted the clients who rented the cottage after The Guest as a courtesy, , and once again, he only had positive feedback, as did the clients who stayed there during late April and ay 2014.
Having spent a month at the cottage during May and June we left on 16 June, and personally cleaned the property ourselves, and in our opinion the house was left in pristine condition.
I have consulted with the caretaker who has advised me that she inspected the property on Friday 18 July, which included airing the house for several hours. She was able to open all the shutters easily and there were no bugs visible anywhere on her departure. I have no reason to dispute this.
The cottage is advertised as just that ,a small holiday cottage, and whilst cleanliness cannot be compromised, the antique furniture in the main bedroom does have some water marks , but I can give my assurance that the said furniture is not mouldy or dirty, as it is cleaned on a regular basis. We felt its authentic French charm warranted keeping it. (Several of our guests have commented on how much they enjoyed the bedroom furniture) This applies to the downstairs furniture as well. No previous guests have made mention of the state of the furniture and we have even had compliments on the French charm of the décor. Please refer to previous reviews to confirm this.
We do take our guests comments seriously and have where suggested, have provided the items suggested such as a toaster and sun loungers.
The comments about the parking area are un warranted, as there is a perfectly good garage available to park a car. The Guest chose to park his car in the small area outside the front door and not use the garage, and I am unable to comment on his reason for doing so.
The cottage is in a rural location, surrounded by farms, and insects are abundant. As far as “creepy crawlies” keeping them awake at night, we have never experienced this ourselves.
The Guest had both my telephone and email details as well as the caretaker's, and I am disappointed he chose not to make contact with either of us. Had he done so, his issues could have been addressed shortly after arrival and where possible would have been immediately resolved. He did in fact email me on discovery that the geyser was not switched on on the night of his arrival, and despite this being at around midnight local time, I responded immediately and the problem was resolved. He emailed me the following morning to confirm that there was hot water and no mention was made of any further unhappiness with the house. (
The Guest made mention of the fact that he had to pay 4.00 Euros to receive his deposit back via PayPal (the preferred method of financial transactions with Holiday lettings). In addition I had no problem refunding him for the day he left early, but was not been given the opportunity to make these arrangements, before he chose to go public with his complaint.

"A comfortable cottage and great base for exploring the Vendee"
The property is clean and well decorated. It is light and airy with very French decor. The downstairs is open plan with kitchen/eating area and sitting room. We particularly liked the French doors leading onto the deck, with table and chairs. A great place for eating "al fresco". The house backs onto a part of the River Vie, which was pretty stagnant at the time. Lots of trees on the opposite bank give the house privacy. There are a small TV and DVD player, but French TV only! Large fireplace with some logs provided. Don't know if you would have to buy more logs if you wanted a fire in the winter. We had very warm weather, but I imagine the house gets quite cold in the cooler months, as it is has a stone floor downstairs and only one electric heater in the sitting area. There are heaters in the kitchen, each of the bedrooms and bathroom too. Bottled gas provided for the cooker, which worked well, once we figured out how to light the oven. Extra long cook's matches are the answer! A full size fridge freezer in the kitchen. Good washing machine and tumble dryer in the basement. Upstairs bedrooms are a good size with comfortable beds. Wooden flooring with no rugs. We also liked the fact that we could park our car off the road and behind gates. Though there seems to be little worry about security, it's reassuring to have gates and shutters etc for peace of mind. Nice to have the lady who looks after the house living just up the lane. She keeps a good eye on things, from a distance!
There is an ample supply of firewood available to guests. This is stored in the basement. A combination of the fire and the heaters keeps the cottage quite cozy during the winter months. There is also an extra fan heater available in the kitchen cupboard if required,

Lovely french characteristics maintained about the house, very clean and really comfortable large beds. Clean, quiet and very peacful, but would be enhanced by some home comforts, particulally comfortable sunloungers/seating to relax in on the decking.
We have taken on board the suggestion of sun loungers on the deck, and now two very comfortable sun loungers are available for relaxing on the deck.
