The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The Salzkammergut region is the country's lake district in which there are countless unspoiled picturesque villages on lake shores encircled by striking mountain peaks. The friendliness of the locals adds to the charm of the entire area and to your holiday experience, children are universally welcome. St Gilgen and the Wolfgansee lake offer a magnificent holiday destination for individuals, groups and famalies alike. From St. Gilgen it is easy to explore, by road, rail and ferry the region's many well known places of interest and family attractions.
St Gilgen / Laim area
The region offers a wide range of cultural, social and sporting activities. The often overused phrase 'something for everyone' really does appy to St. Gilgen and the Salzkammergut.
St. Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart's mother, is located on the shores of the beautiful Wolfgangsee lake in the very heart of Austria's Salzkammergut region. In Summer, a fresh alpine climate and breathtaking scenery make this a true gem and once the snow falls the entire area converts into a magnificent Winter picture postcard. It is easy to see why so many film directors have used St. Gilgen and the surrounding area for dramatic visual impact. The Sound of Music is probably the most famous of the films to use views of St. Gilgen as they appear in the opening sequence.
Whether visiting the festival town of Salzburg, sitting or walking by the lake shore, taking the cable-car ride up the Zwolferhorn Mountain, walking and hiking in the surrounding mountains, riding the paddle steamer to St. Wolfgang's famous White Horse Inn, skiing on the slopes of one of Austria's largest plateaus, the Postalm, playing golf in the 7 nearby courses, or taking part in water sports, St. Gilgen offers you the ideal, typically Austrian, location catering for a wide range of ages and needs .
Within easy driving distance the visitor can visit sites of major historical interest such as the World Heritage Village of Hallstatt or the 'Eagles Nest' both of which are only 50 minutes drive away on scenic and relaxing roads.
For the skiing enthusiast free ski-buses leave the village for the 25 minute trip to the Postalm ski area on Europe's highest plateau. This ski area is suitable for all level of skiers from beginner to advanced. There is also a drag lift & short run 5 minutes walk from the apartment.
Liam itself is a beautiful area surrounded by forrest and open fields that abound with wild life. We have sat on the balcony in the early morning having breakfast watching the deer no more than 10 metres away. While they are hard to photograph we did manage to get one shot which can be seen in the photo gallery.
How to get there
Salzburg Airport is used by an increasing number of airlines. British Airways, Monarch, Thomsonfly, Ryanair and many other European airlines fly to Salzburg. Additionally, visitors may use many charter airlines or seat-only sales through tour operators such as Inghams, Crystal, Thomson etc into Salzburg Arport. The hire of a rental car is recommended although not essential. The drive from Salzburg Airport to St. Gilgen is around 30 minutes, via the Salzburg-Wien Autobahn, taking the Thalgau exit and then continuing through Hof Bei Salzburg and Fuschl to St. Gilgen. A total distance of 35kM.

Guestbook
We had a great holiday in the Salzkammergut region and found the apartment met our every need - especially the balcony for breakfasts and evening drinks. Most comfortable sofabed ever!
Great location and apartment was just right for 2 adults and 2 (energetic) kids. The washing and drying facilities were a god send as the kids enjoyed a lot of the water sports in the region. Will definitely return!
