Ideal as a skiing base in the winter to enjoy the delights of nearby skiing resorts or the pretty Christmas festivities in the villages or perhaps some ice-skating on the lake itself. In summer a superb location for alpine walking or spending time sunbathing, swimming in the lake, which is of drinking quality.

The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

The beautiful Salzkammergut region is an ideal holiday destination all year around. Conveniently located close to Salzburg with its excellent air, rail & motorway connections, the area provides the perfect base for an active, cultural or simply relaxing break.

During the winter you can ski at the Postalm in perfect sunshine or skate on lake Wolfgang if it has frozen over. in the summer you can swim or sunbathe in lake Wolfgang and walk the numerous alpine pastures in glorious sunshine and temperatures.

St Gilgen / Laim area

The apartment is a pleasant 10 minute walk into the centre of St Gilgen. The “picture postcard” village centre has a host of old buildings, many of which are elaborately decorated with traditional frescos.

It also boasts a wide range of shops (including 2 good sized supermarkets), restaurants, cafes, banks & other facilities. In addition, there is a large indoor & outdoor lakeside swimming pool & several children’s play areas.

Cycles are available for rent & provide access to the well maintained flat cycle tracks around the lake as well as the more challenging mountain tracks.

The lakeside promenade is one of the docking points for the Wolfgangsee shipping line, from where St Wolfgang & Strobl are easily reached after a short cruise. It is also home to many local water-sports, including waterskiing & motorboat hire.

There are many bathing beaches around the lake & swimmers will be pleasantly surprised at the warm temperature of the water (not to mention its drinking water quality).

The village is also home a 'Mozart Museum' (situated in the house where Wolfgang Amadeus' mother was born) together with several other museums of local interest. In the evenings, the village brass band plays regular concerts in the picturesque village lakeside gardens during July and August.

How to get there

Fly to Salzburg, cheap flights from Flybe.com, Thomsonfly and Ryanair from the UK. From Ireland Ryanair to Salzburg and Aer Lingus to Salzburg (winter) and Vienna offer great value for money.

*Car hire is advised although not necessary as the shuttle bus from the airport goes to the main bus station, where you can get a local bus to St Gilgen. It is about 1hour journey and cost approx 8 euros. Driving, transfer time is approximately 30 minutes.

All major car rental companies are represented at the airport, recommend booking on the web in advance prices vary so shop around. All cars are of a high standard and all staff speak perfect English.

There is an end of stay cleaning charge of Euro37. A meet and greet fee of euros13 and a linen/laundry charge of Euro10 per person, payable locally. There is also a tourist charge of Euro 1.15 per person per day (15 years and over) which we are obliged to collect.
