The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

The stunningly beautiful Salzkammergut region is an ideal holiday destination. Conveniently located close to Salzburg with its excellent air, rail & motorway connections, the area provides the perfect base for an active, cultural or simply relaxing break.
The area has innumerable picturesque lakes & historic villages to explore, & for those keen to travel slightly further afield, Berchtesgaden, Chiemsee, the Hohe Tauern mountains & even the Czech republic are very easy day trips. There's plenty to interest children, with fairytale castles, ice caves, adventure parks & much more close by.
No visit to the area would be complete without a day or two in wonderful Salzburg, whether to follow in the footsteps of W A Mozart, to seek out those Sound of Music locations or just to visit some of the cities other many attractions.
Whilst a car is a bonus, the local Postbus service is both reasonable priced & exceptionally efficient & can be used to explore the area. The Wolfgangsee shipping company offers a number of ticket options to explore the lake & hop on/ hop off the boat as you do so.
Several local operators offer daytrips to attractions near & further afield & these can easily be booked whilst in the village.
The St Gilgen / Laim area
The apartment is a pleasant 10 minute walk into the centre of St Gilgen. The “picture postcard” village centre has a host of old buildings, many of which are elaborately decorated with traditional frescos. It also boasts a wide range of shops (including 2 good sized supermarkets), restaurants, cafes, banks & other facilities. In addition, there is a large indoor & outdoor lakeside swimming pool & several children’s play areas.
Cycles are available for rent & provide access to the well maintained flat cycle tracks around the lake as well as the more challenging (& well marked) mountain tracks. The apartment has plenty of secure storage should you wish to being you own bicycle.
The lakeside promenade is one of the docking points for the Wolfgangsee shipping line, from where St Wolfgang & Strobl are easily reached after a short cruise. It is also home to many local water-sports, including waterskiing & motorboat hire. There are numerous bathing beaches around the lake & swimmers will be pleasantly surprised at the warm temperature of the water (not to mention its drinking water quality).
The village is also home a 'Mozart Museum' (situated in the house where Wolfgang Amadeus' mother was born) together with several other museums of local interest. In the evenings during July & August, the village regularly hosts a number of bands & orchestras playing concerts in the picturesque village lakeside gardens & village square.
The village is the perfect base for walkers & hikers. All local trails are extremely well marked & most feature picturesque cafes (so you are never too far from the next “kaffe & kuchen”!) Routes vary from the straightforward & fairly flat to challenging & near vertical! Walking maps are available locally & are very easy to follow. For some of the most stunning views in the whole of the Salzkammergut region, take the cable-car to the top of the Zwölferhorn Mountain, from where a number of walks are possible. Alternatively, take the cog railway to the top of the Schafberg Mountain & admire the unrivalled 360 degree panorama of the whole region.

An immaculately presented apartment, fully equiped with everything you need for a stay and more! The balcony provides a picturesque view of the Lake, village and mountains with ever changing colours and scenery day and night. I would happily recommend this to anybody and wish to return soon to continue to explore the area. |

“Varied weather for our week, rain, sleet and snow, and of course, glorious sunshine, but with Austria being such a beautiful place, it didn’t really matter. We enjoyed Austria and this apartment, no problems encountered atall.” The Cornock Family from Chew Valley, England.

“We enjoyed every minute of our holiday in Austria. Apartment was very homely. Unforgettable views from the balcony were enjoyed everyday. Great trips out to enjoy, the Grossglockner road a must. The schafburg mountain by steam train was a wonderful experience, especially the view whilst having lunch. Ate out many times during our stay, the Italian ‘Papagenos’ was very good and also the ‘Wirt am Gries.’ Sad to leave a beautiful place and thanks to Richard and Hilary for the rental of their lovely apartment. We hope to return one day!” Mr and Mrs Skinner, Wiltshire, England.

“The apartment is beautiful and full of character, it was a joy to stay here. We have seen and done so many things, thanks to your guide books. Couple of places to be recommended would be 1) A round trip to Halstatt going on the Postalm Road taking you up into the mountains. 2) Must have a meal in the Angusta Steak House, which is on the Salzburg Road, just a couple of miles outside St.Gilgen, just past Suzuki Garage. 3) Kaisavilla at Bad Ischl is well worth a visit. Thank Richard, Hilary and Lauren for a lovely holiday”. Mr & Mrs Harrel, Windsor, England
“We loved our stay here! The lake is like a mirror of the mountains and the towns around the lakes are so cute!
