The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

The stunningly beautiful Salzkammergut region is an ideal holiday destination all year around. Conveniently located close to Salzburg with its excellent air, rail & motorway connections, the area provides the perfect base for an active, cultural or simply relaxing break.

The area has innumerable picturesque lakes & historic villages to explore, & for those keen to travel slightly further afield, Berchtesgaden, Chiemsee, the Hohe Tauern mountains & even the Czech republic are very easy day trips. There's plenty to interest children, with fairytale castles, ice caves, adventure parks & much more close by.

No visit to the area would be complete without a day or two in wonderful Salzburg, whether to follow in the footsteps of W A Mozart, to seek out those Sound of Music locations or just to visit some of the cities other many attractions.

St Gilgen / Laim area

The apartment is a pleasant 10 minute walk into the centre of St Gilgen. The “picture postcard” village centre has a host of old buildings, many of which are elaborately decorated with traditional frescos. It also boasts a wide range of shops (including 2 good sized supermarkets), restaurants, cafes, banks & other facilities. In addition, there is a large indoor & outdoor lakeside swimming pool & several children’s play areas. Cycles are available for rent & provide access to the well maintained flat cycle tracks around the lake as well as the more challenging mountain tracks.

The lakeside promenade is one of the docking points for the Wolfgangsee shipping line, from where St Wolfgang & Strobl are easily reached after a short cruise. It is also home to many local water-sports, including waterskiing & motorboat hire. There are many bathing beaches around the lake & swimmers will be pleasantly surprised at the warm temperature of the water (not to mention its drinking water quality).

The village is also home a 'Mozart Museum' (situated in the house where Wolfgang Amadeus' mother was born) together with several other museums of local interest. In the evenings, the village brass band plays regular concerts in the picturesque village lakeside gardens during July and August.

The village is the perfect base for walkers & hikers. All local trails are extremely well marked & most feature picturesque cafes (so you are never too far from the next “kaffe & kuchen”!) Walking maps are available locally & are easy to follow. For some of the most stunning views in the whole of the Salzkammergut region, take the cable-car to the top of the Zwölferhorn Mountain, from where a number of walks are possible. Alternatively, take the cog railway to the top of the Schafberg Mountain & admire the unrivalled 360 degree panorama of the whole region.

Winter sports enthusiasts will not be disappointed with skiing in St Gilgen. The Zwolferhorn Mountain offers challenging slopes for experiences skiers, whilst families can enjoy the nursery slopes located just minutes from the apartment. Close by are the well known ski areas at Hintersee & the Postalm, whilst slightly further afield is the vast Dachstein West ski region. The village is well served by ski-buses during the season.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Salzburg (just 25 minutes from St Gilgen), but Munich (1 hour 45 minutes) & Linz (75 minutes) are also convenient to use & situated on major motorways. Ryanair, Flybe, Thompsonfly all operate low cost flights to Austria year round, with several other budget operators flying during the winter season. British Airways & Austrian Airlines also offer reasonably priced fares.

Hire cars are available for rent at all the aforementioned airports. A taxi from Salzburg airport costs in the region of 40-55 euros.

Driving to St Gilgen can seem a little daunting, but in reality is simple & straightforward. The journey takes approximately 10 hours from Dunkirk ferry port & is via excellent toll-free French, Belgian, Dutch & German motorways. Norfolkline Ferries offer some of the best priced fares, but other operators are worth checking as well.

The journey can be completed by rail as far as Salzburg, & then by taxi to St Gilgen.

Our holidays was just great, thanks expecially to you and your charming apartment. We've been in Salzburg many times, on the Zwelferhorn is an unforgettable day, we have been in Bad Ichl many times to enjoy Sauna, we were in Wien and everytime to come back in St Gilgen was like to be back home. Your apartment was full of life and our friends are thinking to come back soon. Your informations were very interesting and have given to me the possibilities to experience incredible places, but my best experience was the Pilgrim's way to St Wolfgang under the snow....I still keep it in my heart.
