Enquire nowThe Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The Salzkammergut area is the 'Lake district' of Austria. A beautiful region of lakes and mountains, with plenty of activities to keep you busy. Ideal for walking, skiing, cycling or perhaps a swim in the lake.
There are many interesting places to visit - the villages around the Wolfgangsee or maybe a little further afield.
There is a cable car from St Gilgen which takes you to the top of the Zwölferhorn mountain, for walking in summer, or skiing in winter, and offering wonderful views of Lake Wolfgang and beyond.
A trip on the Schafberg mountain railway from St Wolfgang (Ried) to the top of the Schafberg mountain is well worth it for great views across the Wolfgangsee and neighbouring lakes.
Halstatt is a beautiful old village with UNESCO world heritage status and is also famous for its salt mines which you can visit. Just a little further around Lake Hallstatt you will find the Dachstein ice caves, which are accessed by a new modern cable car situated at Obertraun. The second stage of the cable car continues to a height of over 2,000 m, for fabulous views and plentiful walks, or for skiing from December to April.
You could enjoy a day exploring the city of Salzburg, which is easily accessible either by bus or car. Its attractions include the castle, the Mirabel Gardens and the narrow streets of the old town. It is famous as the city of Mozart and hosts a music festival every summer.
Bad Ischl is a town situated on the River Traun and boasts the recently renovated Kaiser Therme spa complex with salt water swimming pools and saunas - a wonderful place for a day of relaxation. The town is also famous for Cafe Zauner - there's one in the main street and another with a riverside terrace on the esplanade.
Other lakes nearby include Fuschlsee, Mondsee, Attersee and Traunsee.
The St Gilgen / Laim area
St Gilgen is a pretty village situated on Lake Wolfgang. There are plentiful walking routes in the surrounding mountains, or alongside the lake. The top of the Zwölferhorn mountain (1,522m) can be accessed by cable car from the village, and offers wonderful panoramic views of Lake Wolfgang and beyond.
Walking maps are available from the Tourist Information office. There are several small shops in the village, including two supermarkets, a chemist, banks and bakeries. There are numerous cafes and restaurants in and around the village offering traditional Austrian fare, including fish fresh from the lake, as well as others offering Italian or international cuisine.
The ferry boats depart from the lakeside promenade to take you to the villages of St Wolfgang or Strobl. There are also electric boats or pedalos for hire.
There is a traffic-free cycle route along one side of the lake leading to Strobl and then on to St Wolfgang and bicycles can be hired easily in the village.
Another great place for views across Lake Wolfgang, and surrounding lakes, is the top of the Schafberg mountain at 1,700m, which can be reached by a cog railway from St Wolfgang.
Besides walking, other activities offered in the area include cycling trails, running trails, water-skiing, paragliding, golf, nordic walking, summer toboggan runs, or in the winter months skiing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and ice skating.
The popular Christmas Advent markets take place at weekends (Thursday - Sunday) from the end of November until New Year. There is one market in each of the three villages, with the boat service running between them (ice permitting!).
Ski areas nearby include the Postalm; Zwölferhorn; Hintersee; Dachstein West (Gosau); Katrin (Bad Ischl).
The Postalm ski area is great for beginners and intermediates. It is reached by free ski bus from Strobl, which is about a 15 minute drive from the apartment. You can hire your skis and boots on the Postalm and can also leave them there overnight to save carrying them each day. There is also a ski school.
There is skiing for experienced skiers in St Gilgen on the Zwölferhorn, reached by the cable car from the village. This mountain is also popular with touring skiers.
The Dachstein West ski area, accessed at Gosau, is a much larger area and a good choice for intermediate and more advanced skiers.
Hintersee ski area is easily reached by car and offers a variety of runs.
The Katrin cable car, in the spa town of Bad Ischl, is another small ski area worth a try.
Obertraun/Krippenstein ski area, by Lake Halstatt, has a brand new cable car, and offers good intermediate skiing.
Non-skiers could enjoy a walk in the lovely winter landscapes; ice skating on the frozen lake (weather permitting!) or on the ice rink in St Gilgen; relax in the spa complex in Bad Ischl which has swimming pools plus a variety of saunas and steam rooms; or perhaps take a trip to Salzburg to enjoy a day shopping and sightseeing.

We are a family with 3 children. This apartment was perfect for us with enough space inside and outside. It has very tasteful furnitures and colours, it has real harmony. It has a big, comfortable terrace with view. The apartment is very clean of course. We also like this area and this flat is at the best place in St.Gilgen. We are very satisfied with it. |
