Enquire nowThe Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The stunning Salzkammergut region is an ideal holiday destination all year around. Located close to Salzburg and Vienna, with excellent air, rail & motorway connections, the area provides the perfect location for an Alpine adventure or just simply to relax in the wonderful mountain air.
The area is full of dramatic vistas, numerous lakes and many historic villages and locations, all waiting for you to explore them. The world heritage village of Hallstatt, the trick fountains of Hellbrunn and the Salzburg zoo, are all within a short journey from St Gilgen. Local history and politics can be explored in the nearby Bad Ischl. Both adults and children will be kept busy with parks, woodlands, castles, mines and caves to explore within the local area.
A visit to the Salzkammergut gives you the perfect opportunity to visit the famous city of Salzburg. Mozart and The Sound of Music are just two of the famous elements of Salzburg. The city is divided by the Salzach River into two distinct parts; the new town with its smart shops and quality restaurants, and the wonderful old town with its historical buildings and cultural history.
We provide a comprehensive guide within the apartment, which describes the region and all its attractions.
The St Gilgen area
The village of St. Gilgen is located on the Northwest shores of the Wolfgangsee in the heart of Austria's Salzkammergut, ‘Lake District’ region. With breathtaking scenery and easy access to the city of Salzburg make this an excellent base to explore the surrounding area.
St Gilgen is known as The Mozart Village, and its fairytale centre has a host of old buildings, most of which are decorated with artistic traditional fresco's. With bakery, local shops, banks, and restaurants all located around, or on the Mozartplatz (town centre square). Within a few minutes of the village centre there are two well stocked supermarkets, and the tourist information office.
The village is home to The Mozart Museum and other traditional craft museums, it has a small cinema, and within the park a bandstand which hosts concerts throughout the year.
The boats to St. Wolfgang and Strobl depart from the lakeside promenade. Which is where you will also find many water-sports, including water-skiing and boat hire. Public beaches are located all around the lake which boasts the highest of water quality, many locals enjoy the water and swimming is an active pastime. The area also has many cycle routes both around the lake and in the mountains. Cycle and Ski hire is available just outside of our building. Tourist maps and walking cycle route information are all available at the tourist Information office. The village is a great place and a safe one for children, and now it has a new playground (Spielplatz), which includes an area for very young children, near the bandstand gardens.
The Wolfgangsee is bound on one shore by the Schafberg Mountain with its cog-railway, and on the opposite shore the Zwölferhorn Mountain with a cable car which runs throughout the year.
During the summer the historic mountain cog-railway, www.schafbergbahn.at, runs to the top of the Schafberg, where you can enjoy a meal and a drink (and even spend the night in the mountaintop hotel). Or simply admire the unrivalled 360 degree panorama of the whole region, you can then walk or ride back down the mountain where you can continue on the ferry to visit the lovely villages of St Wolfgang and Ströbl with their lakeside promenades.
Access to the peak of the Zwölferhorn is via cable car or by foot, and at 1522 metres; you will find a number of marked paths and many Alpine huts (café) offering food and drink with fantastic panoramic views. You may wish to return by cable car or on foot. Alternatively the area is very popular with para-gliders and there is a local para-gliding school located at the cable car base.
St Gilgen is a great place to base yourself if you are a fan of winter sports. The Zwölferhorn Mountain which stands over the village has many ski routes ranging from the very challenging to nursery slopes. Hintersee & Postalm ski regions are within a short ride on the ski-bus, and the dramatic Dachstein Mountains, glacier and ski region is also within easy reach.
The village is well served by ski-buses during the winter season. Ideal as a skiing base in the winter to enjoy the delights of nearby skiing resorts or the pretty Christmas festivities in the village or perhaps some ice-skating on the specially built ice rink. In summer a superb location for alpine walking and cycling, or spending time sunbathing and swimming in the lake.

A memorable holiday, once again. The apartment is airy, comfortable, well-equipped and conveniently-located. The two bedrooms are roomy and comfortable with plenty of storage. The kitchen has everything you might need for self-catering and the nearby baker is tremendous. The Spar at the top of the village is more than adequate and there are other options nearby. Eating out opportunities are plentiful and varied. The area is ideal for any kind of outdoor activity as well as for simply lazing by the lake(s). The Postalm valley at the far end of Wolfgansee is not to be missed. Access from Munich Airport is straightforward, although returning to Munich on a Sunday can take longer than suggested. Overall, a fabulous holiday experience which we could not recommend too highly. |
