The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region
The lakeside village of St Gilgen is set amidst an array of mountains. The region is perfect for ski-ing, snowboarding and tobogganing in the winter and walking, hiking, cycling, paragliding and sailing in the summer. All year round, St Gilgen is ideal for those looking for a cultural break. In the village you can visit Mozart's mothers house, the church where his sister was married, as well as a museum on the life of Mozart.
In St Gilgen itself, you can ski on the slopes of the Zwolferhorn mountain. The cable car is approximately 15 minute walk from the apartment.
There are also the ski areas of the Postalm and hintersee, which are within a 35 minute drive. For those who do not wish to drive, you can take the daily ski bus to the Postalm.
The Postalm is very much a family ski area and the selection of runs are suitable for both beginners and more experienced ski-ers.
The Hintersee slopes are more challenging and are not used by the package holiday operators, which makes for less crowded slopes and good ski-ing for intermediates and experienced alike.
St Gilgen area
St Gilgen is a typical Austrian village, very friendly with lots of pretty individual houses and shops (please note that unlike the UK, the supermarkets are closed on Sundays). There are a good choice of restaurants all offering a selection of fresh fish from the lake. In the summer, the lake can be enjoyed for swimming, sailing and other water sports or a cruise around the lake in a paddle steamer which calls at all the other lakeside villages. There is also pitch and putt in the village and bicycles are available for hire. In winter, skis and ski clothing can be hired and within the village itself there is a choice of gentle slopes for first time ski-ers to practice (also for tobogganing/sledges), or for the more advanced skiers, there are the slopes of the Zwolferhorn mountain, set on the edge of St Gilgen. The city of Salzburg is just 30 minutes drive from St Gilgen. Salzburg is most famous for the magnificent composer Mozart and also for the classic film 'The Sound of Music'. In Salzburg you can enjoy a wonderful Mozart dinner concert, take a horse and carriage ride around the old city, visit the Fortress, the Mirabell Gardens, the Palace or just enjoy the wonderful shopping, the gluwein and Christmas stalls.
How to get there
*Fly to Salzburg, cheap flights from Flybe.com and Ryanair.
*Car hire is advised although not necessary as the shuttle bus from the airport goes to the main bus station, where you can get a local bus to St Gilgen. It is about 1hour journey and cost approx 4 euros. Driving, transfer time is approximately 30 minutes.

We tried out several of the restaurants that you recommended and found them to be very good! We also enjoyed watching some of the videos there from past years!"
