The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
The Haute Savoie is one of the most magnificent mountain regions of France with stunning natural beauty. The region is dominated by the grandiose massif of Mont Blanc (Mont Blanc is 'owned' by St Gervais - not Chamonix as popularly believed) The area is lovely in all seasons for skiers, walkers and climbers. There are many places to visit. Chamonix is alive with climbers in summer and skiers in winter. Take the breathtaking cable car trip to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi in the Mt Blanc range and over the Vallee Blanche, a valley of eternal snow (or ski it if you want a real thrill! - and on to Italy. Travel to the elegant Italian town of Courmayeur, or alternatively Annecy with its tranquil lake flowing into the heart of the town, said to be one of the most beautiful in all France. Geneva and its 'grand lac' is only 3/4 hour away, if you have children there is a sandy beach on the lake and a large water park for hours of fun. The whole region is noted for its famous Savoyard cheeses and wines and most towns have a market selling local produce.
St Gervais Les Bains area
ST GERVAIS Is an elegant spa town popular in the 30s. In the heart of the mountains but large enough to have some good restaurants, bars one or two night clubs, quality shops and a lovely market selling local produce. WINTER: There is a huge ski area above the town which links by a simple green run into wealthy Megeve, (mix with the rich and famous) 500 km of pistes and 125 lifts. A paradise of varied skiing from absolute beginners, family runs and some testing runs on the slopes of Mont Joly and up to Cote 2000 in Megeve. Si over to the baroque village of St Nicolas for a good lunch. The ski pass covers St Gervais,St Nicolas, Megeve, Combloux (heavenly after heavy snow with the sun on its tree lined slopes), Jaillet and Les Contamines. Pay a small supplement and go to Chamonix for the day (25mins) -for an adrenalin rush and skiing well into May..There is also Flaine up the road (25mins) Morzine (35mins) and many lovely smaller resorts.
In SUMMER: The possibilities for walking, climbing, riding, mountain biking (on marked trails), ballooning, canoeing etc are endless. There are 184 km of marked walks around St Gervais alone. There are championship golf courses at Megeve and Chamonix. The town boasts a lovely open air swimming pool and tennis complex, The Spa offers health and beauty treatments and its natural waters have attracted people since the turn of the century. There is an indoor swimming pool in the park surrounding the Spa and a lovely walk from here takes you to the wonderful cascade pouring into the gorge which runs through the town. An ice rink and equitation centre at Bettex for riding in the mountains. Guided walks are arranged at the ‘Cimes’ or at the tourist centre which take you into the beautiful countryside to view the wildlife. The cable cars and tramway run from mid June to mid Sept for walks high in the mountains. Mont Blanc tramway is one of the oldest rack railways in France and worth the trip. You can climb to the glacier (or the summit if you are so minded!). More gentle walks in the lovely meadows full of wild flowers in spring at Bellevue, or stop at the Col de Voza. The cabins take you to the summit of Mont D'Arbois where you can walk to old Savoyard villages or the more sophisticated Megeve, with its fashionable shops and delicious restaurants (at least one Michelin starred) Try the local village of Cordon, truly the ‘balcon du Mont Blanc’, its overwhelming view of the whole range including the Aiguille. Just stand and stare as the mountain turn pink in the sunset.

Guestbook for Chalet La Cordee
'Loved it ...will definitely be back next year'.
' brilliant place for all of us. We were a mixed group - skiers of all levels and non skiers we could all find plenty to do'
'great not having to get in the car or walk for miles uphill to get to the lifts, restaurants and shops. It meant everyone could come back when they wanted to'
'St Gervais has remained a real french village as well as providing plenty of scope for skiers, climbers and walkers'
