The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
St Gervais is located in a particularly beautiful region of France, the Haute Savoie, which is primarily known for skiing, walking and biking (oh and cheese). It is also positioned superbly to offer the visitor easy access to many outstanding places to visit, most easily within 1hrs drive. Historic Annecy is a must – home to the most photographed monument in France, as is the old town in Geneva, and whilst you’re there why not do some window shopping for a new watch? Take a boat ride around Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman depending on whether you’re in France or Switzerland) or visit the lakeside spa town of Thonon Les Bains.
Access to Italy is only 20mins away through the Mont Blanc tunnel, and a trip over the Col de Montets (through the nature reserve) to the Emosson Dam in Switzerland will take only 45mins.
The winter climate is, predictably, cold and snowy whilst in the summer the temperature in June, July and August reaches highs of 26°C.
St Gervais Les Bains area
St Gervais is a picturesque spa town at the foot of Mont Blanc which became popular with tourists in the 1806s when they came for the therapeutic waters. When the first ski lifts were opened in the 1930s it placed St Gervais firmly on the map as an all year round resort; whilst also making it the only town in the Alps to combine the exhilaration of mountain sports with the pleasure of health and beauty.
The town is situated in the heart of the mountains; with a narrow river gorge, and baroque church adding to its charm. It also has the benefit of a selection of excellent restaurants, bars and shops, and a weekly market selling local produce and crafts. Its position at the foot of Mont Blanc provides a starting point for the famous Voie Royale route up Europe's highest mountain. Whilst its link with the Megeve ski area provides access to 445km of pistes in the winter, and 350km of excellent marked hiking and mountain bike trials in the summer (including the 90km Diamant Vert mountain bike network).
Winter We think the skiing in St Gervais is great; and whilst we might be biased, we’re happy to report we’re not the only ones who love the resort. The Ski Club of Great Britain gives it an excellent write-up and its readers' comments on the resort are glowing.
The ski area offers the potential of 445km of pistes and is ideal for groups of mixed abilities. The advanced skiers and boarders will love the wide range of off piste, and with powder days offering fresh tracks until mid morning; if you want it, it's yours. The pretty tree lined runs and wide open motorways allow for plenty of glory skiing by the intermediates, and the beginners will appreciate the gentle green and blue runs from the top of Mont d’Arbois. With a championship terrain park and half pipe to go at; there surely couldn’t be anything more you’d want from a ski area.
As if that wasn’t enough, you can also access Les Houches, in the Chamonix Valley. Host to a World Cup Downhill ski race every January, the area offers some good terrain and the compunction to see just how fast you can get from the top to the bottom (the men’s downhillers do it in 2 mins). And with Les Contamines also included in the Evasion Mont Blanc ski pass we challenge you to ski every run.
If skiing isn't your thing, or you're having a day off from sliding around on the white stuff, St Gervais offers a diverse selection of activities to keep you entertained; the thermal spa for a relax; try a new experience and go snowshoeing or paraponting; the weekly farmers market offers a great selection of local produce, and families will love ice skating, sledging, swimming, huski rides, and the Tramway du Mont Blanc.
Summer You certainly won’t be short of things to do in the summer in St Gervais. From mid June to mid September the lifts provide access to 350km of marked trails for walkers with the Diamant Vert mountain bike trails utilizing trails and lifts across three valleys. Serious walkers can take on the challenge of Mont Blanc and serious holiday makers can enjoy all the other aspects of an alpine holiday which makes it truly special (the mountain restaurants, the fresh air, and the spectacular views).
For families facilities include an ice rink, tennis courts, mini golf, swimming pool, tree top adventures, horse and donkey rides and a summer luge. For those looking for action and adventure why not go climbing, quad biking, karting, paint balling, canoeing, via ferrata, paraponting and canyoning. Or if it’s a more relaxed pace of life there are two golf courses within a 25 min drive, plus the natural thermal spa at St Gervais to pamper yourself.
