The Rhone/French Alps region
Haute-Savoie is a department in the Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France, bordering both Switzerland and Italy. Its capital is Annecy. To the north is Lake Geneva and Switzerland; to the south and southeast are the Mont Blanc and Aravis mountain ranges. The French entrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Italy is in Haute-Savoie. It is noted for winter sports; the first Winter Olympic Games were held at Chamonix in 1924.
St Gervais Les Bains
The spa resort of Saint-Gervais is situated at the foot of Mont Blanc and has attracted tourists since 1806 for its therapeutic waters. At an altitude of 850 metres, St Gervais’ first ski lifts were installed in the 1930’s. With access into its own ski area linked with Megeve, it has recently found new popularity, particularly with families. Set in a narrow river gorge halfway between Megève and Chamonix, the landscape is impressive wherever you look and a trip up the mountain on the Mont-Blanc Tramway is not to be missed. There’s a good choice of bars, restaurants, bakeries & creperies (not to mention the chocolate!) and several supermarkets to use for everyday essentials. The local market comes to town on a Thursday with a range of Savoyard treats.
This makes St Gervais a brilliant destination in both winter and summer. In winter for the skier there are 420km of runs in the Evasion-Mont Blanc Ski Pass area covering St Gervais-Megeve-Combloux-Contamines and st Nicolas De Veroce with skiing to suit all abilities and ages with an especially good snow park . You can also access the les Houches ski area via the Mont-Blanc Tramway, a Victorian Funicular which is quite an experience. In the evening there is a great choice of bars, restaurants and night club for apres-ski. Further afield the ski areas of Flaine and Chamonix are easily accessible for a day out. For the non-skier there are many walks from the village including along the gorge and up/down to St Gervais Le Fayet using the funicular for the return leg. There is shopping in town including the large food and crafts market in the village center on Thursdays. There is a fantastic spa, with proper thermal waters in Le Fayet (4km) which a huge range of treatments and facilities and day trips to Geneva, Annecy up the mountain on the chair or funicular and to the other twons like Megeve and Cahmonix are all very easy.
In the summer there are 180KM of signposted walks and Saint Gervias is part of the 90Km Diamond Vert VTT circuit for mountain bikes. There is also access to all sorts of sporting activities in the village and in the mountains (ice skating, tennis, swimming at the pool and lake, paragliding, horse riding, climbing, archery, rafting etc etc)
