Clos de la Fontaine
About the home
We have tried to create a warm relaxing home from home in this delightful French town. Our apartment on the first floor is somewhere to linger if you want to chill after enjoying all that the Alps have to offer. The lounge has a large comfy sofa which will support four adults, and the kitchen is very well equipped for those who like to cook. During the day we are bathed in natural light, the large south east facing balcony makes for the perfect sun bathing spot as well as a view of the mountains.
Both bedrooms have large fitted robes and access a balcony with stunning views of the Mont Blanc range. You can see the Baroque church like a picture postcard from the comfort of the king size bed in the master, its very pretty when lit by night. The balconies are ideal to wander on in the mornings, take in the mountain air and eat breakfast in spring and summer. The second bedroom has full size bunk beds, this is a room not a cabin. Both rooms have nice linen on the beds and throws if you like to snuggle up for a quick snooze before dinner after a hard day having fun. We have a proper bath in a modern bathroom with shower where you can soothe your tired limbs or take yourself off to the famous Thermal Spa in town if you need professional TLC.
We love the spot the apartment is in, it's quiet and yet close to everything you need. The nearest bar and shops including ski hire are only a minutes walk. "Centre Ville" in St Gervais has a lovely variety of bars and restaurants, Savoyard specialities are plentiful. It takes 10 minutes to walk there if you can avoid the pull of the charcuterie and patisserie on the way. If you are completely goosed and decide to get your car out of our underground garage, there's free parking in the main square.

HAUTE SAVOIE
One of the most frequented destinations of the skiing fraternity, the département of Haut Savoie has some of the most sought after and chic ski resorts from Chamonix, which hosted the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924, with its Alpine Museum at the foot of the towering splendour of Mont Blanc, to the sophisticated station of Mégève - the first ever winter sports resort, created in 1921.
The most visited département in the Rhone Alpes, Haute Savoie is especially rich in natural attractions, the most famous of which is of course Mont Blanc, highest of the Alpine peaks. A delightful mountain tramway takes you from Le Fayet through St. Gervais up to the lower slopes of Mont Blanc to different points depending on the season - either to ski or enjoy the alpine pastures and the views. The journey lasts for an hour.
The Aiguille du Midi boasts the highest cable car in the world which first came into operation in 1955. The 20 minute journey takes you to 3,942 metres with a stunning panoramic view of Mont Blanc and the surrounding mountains. In Summer a cable car journey to Italy crosses over 5 kms of glaciers. In winter there are 20 kms of downhill ski trails.
The St Gervais Les Bains area
St. Gervais is a delightful old Savoyard Spa town at an altitude of about 850 metres. The mountains in the St. Gervais area have an excellent record for reliable snow conditions in the winter. There are miles of ski slopes available on the Evasion ski pass, set amongst the pretty wooded landscape, by summer many of these become tracks for mountain bikes giving this area year round appeal. Whether you are an avid skier or beginner this place has lots to offer groups, families and couples including the Mont blanc tramway.
If you are looking for rest and relaxation in a mountain retreat with spa treatments, walking or just soaking in the views and enjoying regional food, this is for you. If you want adventure in the mountains, its all available here in a village that retains it baroque charms and architecture.
The panorama can not fail to impress any visitor and its wonderful to see the seasons unfold their different beauty on the mountains. Opening the shutters in a morning to the thrill and anticipation of the white stuff, seeing the landscape change as the clouds and light move through the day, walking through the mountains spring flowers, wiling away an afternoon sunbathing at the towns open air pool on a balmy afternoon are all part of the possibilities, whether young or young at heart. While you explore or ski, young children can be looked after at the crèche or kindergarten at Le Bettex, where there are also activity clubs for older children.
Saint Gervais is less than 15 minutes from the autoroute and rail links. Regular local buses connect all the local villages. Www.resortrides.com can accomodate airport transfers and other bespoke transport needs they are friends of ours who provide a value service and are english and french speaking.
In summer you can walk for miles on marked paths, in meadows or high altitude, including the well loved 'balcony walks' along the Chamonix valley. Megève, the beautiful town well known by the rich and famous, can be easily reached by car within about 10 minutes or more leisurely with spectacular views via the very efficient mountain lift system. Chamonix, immediately at the foot of Mont Blanc (4807m), can be reached by car within 25-30 minutes and a visit by cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi (3804m high) near the summit of Mont Blanc is absolutely breathtaking. Its here if you take a guide that you can begin the longest ski descent in europe, the Vallee blanche.
SEASONAL ACTIVITIES:
WINTER: ski, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snow shoe walking (snow hikes over special routes), snow park (for special snow activities), ski entertainment area for young children, crèche facility & kindergarten at Le Bettex (next village up the mountain from St. Gervais).
SUMMER: tennis, walking, fishing, horse riding, golf (also championship courses at Megève and Chamonix), mini-golf, cycling, mountain biking on marked trails, canoeing, white water rafting, canyoning, kayaking, rock climbing, hot-air ballooning (discovery flight), water sports lake with beach (20 mins), summer tobogganing at Megève and Chamonix, summer skiing on Mont Blanc.
SUMMER & WINTER: ice-skating, ice dancing & ice hockey (Olympic ice rink), swimming, paragliding, hang-gliding, thermal baths, mountain railway (St. Gervais to Mont Blanc), activity clubs for children (Le Bettex), sports centre (Megève), mountaineering at Chamonix (with professional guide).
SKIING INFORMATION
The skiing area is accessed by walking out of the apartment to the lift approx 250m. The pass for "Evasion" can be bought there which integrates into the Megève domain with 360kms of pistes and over 100 lifts and is ideal for mixed ability groups. The pistes themselves vary from pretty tree-lined runs amongst the evergreen forests to large open areas, catering for skiers of all standards, beginners, intermediates and the really advanced. There are snow making machines on many runs during the winter for guaranteed skiing. Some areas are specifically allocated for snowboarding and there are large areas for safe off-piste skiing. The mountains included in the lift pass are Mont d'Arbois (1833m), Mont Joux (1958m), Mont Joly (2525m), Rochebrune (1754m), Cote 2000 (2014m) and Jaillet (1757m).
MOUNTAINEERING
The 4810m summit of Mont Blanc rises on the communal territory of Saint Gervais. From the resort, mountaineers can follow the famous 'Voie Royale' to Mont Blanc, conquered in 1855 by an Englishman named Hudson. Start with an excursion on the Mont Blanc Tramway before walking towards the Tête Rousse mountain refuge and a stop over near the 'Aiguille de Goûter'. Climb the 'Dôme du Goûter' towards the Vallot mountain refuge and the final ridge to the summit at 4810 metres. It is advisable to hire one of the experienced professional mountain guides, who have offices at St. Gervais.
GOLF INFORMATION
There are championship courses at Megève, only 15 mins (11kms) by car from St. Gervais and also at Chamonix about 30 mins (24kms) away. Mini-golf is also available at St. Gervais.

We were a group of 3 and found the apartment very comfortable. It is situated virtually on the car park of the Bettex ski lift making it a 2 minute walk back at the end of the day and there's even a lift so no climbing stairs when you're tired. Pros...... Very clean, good heating, nice bath with plenty of hot water for a good soak after a long day's skiing. There's a shower over bath if you prefer. Comfortable beds. Reliable key service, quick text when leaving motoway, and the key holder arrived as we did. He also arrived in good time to check the apartment before we departed. 5 mins walk to bread shop and 10 mins walk to centre. Cons......lacking in drawer space in bedrooms, The apartment is open plan with the entrance door, Bathroom, bedrooms and toilet all opening on to the living/kitchen/dining area. Very little work space for preparing food. Oven is a bit tricky and the instruction book is of little help. No wifi. No hand basin in the toilet - have to walk through kitchen area to get to the bathroom to wash your hands. The pros outweighed the cons for us and we would consider using again. The biggest plus being the proximity to the main ski lift. |
