The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region
The Limousin is considered one of the best-kept secrets in France. A stunning rural region filled with lakes, rolling valleys and forested mountains crossed by fish filled rivers. The tiny hamlets and villages conceal treasures of French rural life.
The landscape of Limousin has a long history, from the pre-historic to the Romans, and the heather strewn moorlands were the inspiration for many of Monet's famous paintings. There are a huge number of important sites and town's in France's history, from Limoges, the porcelain centre with the towering cathedral, to Bourganeuf, the centre of the Templa Knights, and from the remains of the city gates in La Southerraine to Chalus, where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded.
For food lovers, The Limousin specialises in sheep and the Limousin cattle bred in the region. Fish from the mountain streams and the fruit and mushrooms from the miles of forests and fruit plantations mean that there are plenty of local delicacies to experiment with. not to mention the cheese and gateaux famous in Limousin.
Limousin is a rural area, and therefore there is no end of fabulous walking, cycling and horse riding options. From La Nouvelle Vie you also have the flexibility to take a kayak on one of the Mountain Rivers, or fish along the peaceful banks of the streams and lakes.
There are also a great variety of golf courses available in Limousin ( nine altogether). All of which are open to visitors all year round.
Weather in Limousin, France
Summer temperatures in Limousin often reach over 32ºC, and staying in the Limousin will expose you to 2000 hours of sun per year. However, the winters can be cold and wet, and snow is not uncommon, as Limousin is mainly an upland area.
St Germain les Belles area
For some beautiful panoramic views of this area visit Mont Gargon just 6kms away, with an altitude of 731m ( verdeyme is 550m) Or search out a bargin at one the local markets and car boot sales.Or soak up the amosphere at the local fetes of which many have live music.Or dine out at one of the many restaurants around ,especially at Miday when you can have a 5 coarse lunch for about 12 euros Which includes the wine. This is just a small sample of what you can do here.there are plenty more displayed in our information pack together with local maps. SHOPPING. The pretty village of Chambret,5miles away has an excellent boulangerie,a supermarket which is open until 7pm mon-sat and 10am to 12am on sundays, bars restaurants, chemist, doctors, bank, post office (with 24hr cash machine)Or if you are a shopaholic there is always Limoges and Brive to explore. HOUSE HUNTING IN THE LIMOUSIN. La Nouvelle Vie is in an ideal position for house hunters as it is on the border of the Correze and the Haute Vienne giving easy access to both departments. A list of English speaking local estate agents, giving phone nos, email addresses and web-sites can be supplied on request. This would give an opportunity for research and property selection before arrival. Also if you have any queries about living in the Limousin we are always willing to help.

VISITORS COMMENTS. (A few samples taken from the Nouvelle Vie guestbook).
August 2008 Had a lovely fortnight in spite of rather English weather! Really enjoyed the peace and quiet.Chatted to madame,la voisine, and swapped gardening tips. Good days out to Oradour sur Glane;Treignac;Uzerche;Correze;Gimel-les-Cascades,Vigeois.Enjoyed the house-especially the wood-burning stove which we needed one evening. Nice to see so much wildlife:,deer stoats, shew, lizards and the semi-retardent toad, who sat on the step every evening catching the insects attracted by the outdoor light. Would rent again if holidaying in the Limousin.
July 2008. Dear Ruth & Mick. Thank you so much for your warm welcome & help. La Nouvelle Vie is home from home,so well equipped and maintained the best we have stayed in. We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday & seen some beautiful places and scenery. We had an aperitif with your neighbour Renee & got on really well, in spite of (or perhaps because of!) her total lack of English & our poor attempts at French! Be prepared for an avalanche of enquiries as we will sing your praises to all & sundry A bientot & our best wishes.
April 2008. What a good find,a spacious property with everything you would expect for a happy holiday.helpful owners who ensured we had everything we could need for our stay. The whole area is very beautiful and although a bit more remote than some areas, facilities were not to far away.Chamberet is very close for basic shopping wth bigger towns within an hours drive if needed
March 2008. Dear Mick. We have had such a wonderful stay here and enjoyed discovering the region so much,as there is so much to see and do(too much for one week)we may very well return. The house has been a "mini home from home" with all the comforts one could wish for a perfect holiday. Thanks for everything.
March 2008. Dear Mick .We thought your cottage was just great. It was a joy to find one so clean and tidy and was a treat to come home to each night after house hunting all day.We have been searching for a house in the Limousin now for 3 years, and at last I am happy to say we have found one,and I only hope we can make ours as cosy as yours was. Thanks for being so helpful and I hope we will see more of you and Ruth when we move over for good. Bye for now your greatful guests.
March 2008. We had a great holiday in your property. The Limousin is a beautiful and unspoilt area. The property was very well equipped with everything we needed. The log burning fire was fantastic at night, really cosy. The property was private with beautiful views. Thanks for the homemade bread, butter, jam and wine we received on our arrival,It was a nice thought and we enjoyed it.We had some great days out at the lakes at Chateauneuf la Foret and Meilhards. It is nice to have these beaches on the lakes for the children. We went karting at Lubersac and also visited the zoo at Le Vigen (towards Limoges) which we enjoyed. There are many pretty villages in the Limousin, but we think you picked a special place to live.It is a beautiful part of France. If anyone we know wants to come to this region for a holiday I will certainly recommend your property. Thanks for making us so welcome. We wish wish you the best for the future and hope to see you again.
Dec 2007. We enjoyed a wonderful and very peaceful and relaxing Chistmas at La Nouvelle Vie.We felt so at home there. The warmth and ambience of the cottage welcomed us with open arms after our long journey.Almost everything that was needed you had supplied for our comfort and enjoyment and the cottage was spotless and very comfortable-thank you very much. The breakfast hamper was very much appreciated and enjoyed.Thank you also for adding the "Christmas" touches of the two decorated trees, holly and of course the traditional "mistletoe". A beautiful area for scenery-eitherwalking,cycling or driving. Many villages and small towns to visit for sight seeing or for eating out.We truly hope to make another visit for we loved the peace and tranquility of the cottage and the surroundings.Truly home from home-lovely.
