The Paphos District

Climate
Typical Mediterranean climate, rainfall mainly from mid-November to March. All seasons ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summers always hot and rarely wet. Spring April - May temperatures between 21-24, Summer Jun - Aug 28-31, Autumn Sep - Nov 29-27, Winter Dec - Mar 17-19.

History
Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Aphrodite the goddess of love's mythical birthplace was on this island. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods are still being found. After 1974, there was rapid economic expansion especially in tourism. The government invested heavily in water works, road infrastructure and the building of Paphos International Airport. Today modern Paphos, with a population of about 50,000, is a popular sea and a fast developing tourist resort. New Paphos possesses a quaint fishing harbour with seafront promenade and restaurants.

Landmarks
UNESCO added the whole town of Paphos to its World Cultural Heritage List because the area is of exceptional architectural and historic value.

7. Yeroskipou with its remarkable five-domed Byzantine church of Ayia Paraskevi, and its Folk Art Museum is a town known for the production of arts & crafts and special 'loukoumia' sweets.
