The Paphos region

Paphos, once the capital of Cyprus, is on the south western edge of the island, and well placed for excursions to all the main sights. It's quieter than the southern resorts of Larnaca and Limassol, but still offers plenty for sun-seekers, families, cultural types and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

History and culture are two of the island's big selling points, and you don't have to venture far to find them in Paphos, where the whole town is UNESCO listed. Close to Paphos harbour is the house of Dionysos, a villa containing some of the best preserved mosaics in the Mediterranean region. Mainly depicting scenes from Greek mythology, they were accidentally discovered by a farmer ploughing his field. It's worth recommending that clients go on a guided tour to bring the mosaics to life.

Paphos is at its liveliest at night, when the bars, restaurants and clubs bring together tourists and locals of all ages. There is something for everyone.

Strike out in any direction from Paphos and, within a few miles, you'll find long stretches of sandy beaches, rugged hills and rolling countryside.

St George

The Akamas Peninsula

The Akamas Peninsula has been designated as a national park, and is partially forested on the higher ground, with three short nature trails and a northern coastal path connecting them. Standing on the ridge line it is possible to see both the West and the North coast of the island.

This peninsula, located in the North Western part of Cyprus is named after Akamas, son of Theseus, who in Greek Mythology landed here en route from the Trojan War and is rumoured to be one of Aphrodite’s lovers.

The uniqueness of the area, and for the whole of the Mediterranean, is centred on its precious ecology. The diversity of flora and fauna living in this relatively small area is truly impressive. Rare endemic plants grow there and many types of migratory birds live in Akamas or use it in their movements.

In addition to its species habitats, the area is also important because of its diverse community habitats. Some of these are; – Pine, Juniper and Maquis forests, Gorges, Sand dunes and Cliffs.

A memorable experience for those visiting the area is to partake in one of the Akamas nature trails. The view towards the west coast of the Akamas is unforgettable.

Hiking on the Akamas

A major characteristic of this peninsula is its beaches. Akamas is the only large unspoiled coastal area remaining in Cyprus and one of the very few important sea turtle nesting areas in the Mediterranean. Both the Loggerhead Turtle and the rarer Green Turtle nest here; the latter relies on the Akamas beaches for its survival in this region. The annual number of Green Turtle nesting females in the entire Mediterranean could be as low as 325-375, making them an endangered species.

A memorable experience for those visiting the area is to partake in one of the Akamas nature trails. The view towards the west coast of the Akamas is unforgettable.

Thanks so much for your review. The owner (Filip) is constantly making small upgrades, this year it was wifi and kitchen appliances. Villa Filip pool is totally secluded as there are no neighbours, so it gets booked up early. Thanks again, Irene
