The South West region
Most southerly of the windward islands, Grenada lies between the Caribbean sea and the Atlantic ocean north of Trinidad and south of St Vincent. The island is magical, the capital St Georges is built around a natural harbour and the prettiest in the Carribbean. Tropical fruits are on sale, mangos, papaya, pineapples, bananas and most of all the various spices grown here which give the island its name,Spice island, Nutmeg, which has many properties for healing, cinnnamon. There temperature does not fall below 75 degrees, and in the rainy season (May to November) it will only rain for an hour or two then bright sun shnes again.
St George's / L'Ance Aux Epines area
There are many trips, fishing, sailing, diving, snokelling, windsurfing, boat trips, rhum runner trips where you calypso and drink rum!. There is also a small nine hole golf course on the island near Grand Anse. You can visit the rum distillery and chocolate factory, watch cricket, visit the botanical gardens and see the fort above St Georges with the cannons still in place. You can hire jeeps, bicycles and go river tubing. You can visit sugar mills and cocoa factories, also in season you can see the turtles come to nest on the northern beaches, and lay their eggs. It is possible to make day trips to Carricou, as there is a frequent ferry from the Carenage, and also to the Grenadines. There are accompanied jeep tours and eco tours.
How to get there
There are many flights a week to the international airport in Grenada, only 10 minutes away from this apartment. Virgin and BA fly several times a week and XL.Com fly there on a Sunday and Thursday, each week. These flights are very good value and it is possible to book online from £178 return. The average price to pay is around £220 return, excellent for the Caribbean and the flight is an easy direct 8 hour journey from London Gatwick. I can recommend a company at Gatwick who will take your car from you at the airport door and return it to you when you arrive home, so no hassle parking. (Pegasus Executive cars and they are about £10 a day). When you land in Grenada you can get a taxi or a car hire company will collect you and take you to your apartment or car/jeep which you can hire for around £140 a week.

Further details indoors: The area is a quiet residential area with lovely wqalks to the beaches and coves in all directions. A very short distance are the local bars and restaurants and the closest beach is 100 metres away. Approx 2km is Grand Anse with its superb 2 mile long beach with numerous bars, restaurants, watersports facilities including world class diving on beautiful reefs and wrecks as well as snorkelling. I can recommend a diving centre (5 star Padi) where you can learn to dive from scratch ane the more experienced divers can visit wrecks and see the turtles, sharks, rays, dolphins and many fish species.
Further details outdoors: It is possible to have a very peaceful getaway here, amongst the private tropical gardens and private terraces but you can also, a short distance away, seek out nightlife in the neighbouring towns of Grand Ans, Mourne Rouge, True Blue and the city of St Georges some 10km away. There are beautiful beaches in the north of the island at Sauters with views to the Grenadines and Carricou and if you go inland you will find the tropical rainforests and lakes of Grand Etang as well as waterfalls such as Concord and some great walks up in the hills. On Friday evenings there is "Fish friday" in Gouyave, approx 20km from St Georges, where local music is played live and you wander from stall to stall eating all the different fresh fish dishes, and drinking the local rum or Carib beer. You can visit the local rum distillery and also the chocolate factory. For shopping there are many markets in St Georges as well as the sophisisticated air conditioned malls where anything can be purchased such as local crafts and duty free goods. Grenada is an undeveloped country compared with Barbados, but with a unique charm od its own and a very easy place to fall in love with. I did, it took me one day when I visited on a cruise ship, now I cannot stay away. They people are the kindest and friendliest people I have ever met.
