The West Wales/Pembrokeshire region

Pembrokeshire's is renowned for its stunning scenery both in the countryside locations and on the superb coastline as well as friendly villages and towns. It was made Britain's first coastal National Park in 1952 and has more than 155,000 acres of land in its care. Excellent walking and superb views can be enjoyed along the 186 miles of Pembrokeshire Coast footpath as well as in the Preseli hills which are full of magic and mystery with standing stones and ancient mounds and forts steeped in history. Pembrokeshire offers peace and tranquillity enticing holidaymakers to return time after time. Then there are the beaches, coves and bays with literally miles of gold and silver sand – find you favourite beach – whether its for sandcastles, surfing, swimming, boating, climbing, coasteering, rock pooling, cricket, picnics or just relaxing. The coastline and villages have changed very little over the years however they do provide some excellent individual shops, galleries and artists' studios as well as providing welcoming restaurants, pubs and cafes.

St Dogmaels

St Dogmaels and Poppit Sands

St Dogmaels village lies on Pembrokeshire's county boundary along the river Teifi just below Cardigan town. There are several welcoming pubs, a village store, post office, wholefood café, working flour mill, gallery and the ruins of St Dogmaels Abbey as well as the start (or end!) of the 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. The Teifi river still supports a few commercial fishermen but now most of the boats moored along this sheltered waterway are leisure craft. It is an excellent habitat for birds and wildlife and there is a Wildlife centre just a few miles further along the estuary at Cilgerran. The local beach is Poppit sands and dogs are welcomed. The beach is extremely popular all year round with its blue flag status and wide expanse of sand all backed by a working lifeboat station, cafe and ample parking. The Pembrokeshire Coastal path leads from the beach to Cemaes Head and beyond. An innovative coastal bus service runs the length of the coastal path, enabling walkers to leave their cars, walk along the coastal path as far as they like and catch the bus back to their car.
