L'Echerbaudière is situated in Northern Mayenne on the outskirts of St Denis de Gastines and close to the towns of Ernée and Mayenne. Set in over 3 acres of private gardens, surrounded by the beautiful Mayenne countryside, it is the perfect rural retreat, offering a peaceful relaxing holiday.

L'Ancienne Maison has been tastefully renovated to offer modern, comfortable, accommodation that is suitable for families or groups. It is the perfect location for those wishing to explore the interesting Mayenne region or some of the relatively nearer French tourist attractions and for those seeking leisure facilities: horse-riding, cycling, walking, fishing, golf and swimming etc, are all close by.

L'Ancienne maison lounge/kitchen/diner with it's exposed beams and feature stone walls benefits from a modern fully equipped kitchen with an oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave etc.

The wood burning fire provides additional comfort during the cooler months and the perfect relaxation spot with a glass of wine and a good book. For your entertainment the lounge has UK TV via satellite and a DVD player along with several board games and books. There is an interconnecting door that leads into L'Arch that is locked and secured unless both gîtes are rented together.

The woodern staircase from the lounge leads up to the two comfortable bedrooms and the family bathroom. The main bedroom has a double bed whilst the second bedroom contains twin beds. Electric heaters are provided for both bedrooms during the colder months. The bathroom is fully equipped with a shower facilities in the bath.

Next door to L'Arch you will find the door that leads up to our large games room with it's high vaulted ceiling that provides pool/snooker, darts, baby-football, large chess set, TV & DVD player and numerous other games and books. Separate WC.

All bed linen and towels (except swimming towels) are provided. Baby facilities (cot, high chair and stair gate) can be provided upon request, free of charge.

Guests have the full use of the upper lawn, where you will find the large above ground pool (which is solar heated from mid June - mid September (weather permitting)), patio area with garden furniture and sun loungers, BBQ facilities and table tennis. At the side of the building is the paddock which is ideal for children to play ball games or perhaps a game or two of badminton.

For guests that might wish to take a walk there is a bridal path that starts on the doorstep. Some bicycles available for guest use.

The Loire Valley / Mayenne region

There are numerous towns and villages close by that offer the opportunity for interesting visits: Mayenne, Laval, Portmain, Vitré, Lassay Les Châteaux and Ambrières are just a few. The medieval town of Fougères is well worth exploring and is only a 30 minute drive. Laval also has a golf course and offers both an 18 and 9 hole course.

Le Mont St Michel (France's 2nd most visited tourist attraction) with its magnificent Abbey in the bay, quaint shops and restaurants offers a memorable day trip and is within a 2 hour drive. A must for all visitors.

Saint-Malo is the same distance and offers a walled city, cobbled streets, interesting architecture and an abundance of crêperies, restaurants and shops as well as beautiful beaches for an afternoons relaxation before the drive home.

The St Denis de Gastines area

L'Echerbaudière nestles in the gentle rolling coutryside of Northern Mayenne situated close to the towns of Ernée (10 kms) and Mayenne (16 kms).

The local village of St Denis de Gastines has two bars, two bakers, a small supermarket, bank facilities and horse-riding. There are numerous local châteaux well worth a visit and both river and lake fishing are within a 15 minute drive.
For those who like to cycle or walk, there are over 200kms of beautiful off-road cycle tracks close by and plenty of bridal paths both on the doorstep and within the local area.

“Lovely Gite, Not really suited for young families” We spent 10 days in the 2 Bedroom Gite and found the accommodation to be very nice. The Kitchen had everything you could need for a holiday let, it was homely and comfortable. The location is out of the way on the outskirts of a quiet little village. Please note though that this is farming land and we were unfortunate to go during muck spreading season which basically left us "Gite-bound" for the last week of our stay. The smell really was offensive and despite washing all our clothes whilst we were there, they had to be run through the washing machine at home twice before the smell was gone - it really was quite bad. On the plus side the facilities were good - great games room - perfect for older childen, laundry room, BBQ facilities. One point to note is the swimming pool was used twice as it was too cold to use so the description of "Heated pool" really isn't reflective as it's a solar panelled heated pool which only increases the temp by a few degrees, and if the weather hasn't been blistering it's a short dunk rather than a leisurely soak which left us with one very disappointed little girl. The outside however is lovely and pretty and there are BBQ facilities, tables and chairs, loungers etc. I should note that the proximity of the owners house is just across the courtyard so if you are looking for a secluded setting, this probably isn't it, although the owners were very pleasant and most helpful. The only other thing to mention is it's advertised as having wi-fi available, you need to either go into the owners house or brave the bees and wasps during the day or midges at night whilst you sit on the bench by the owner's front door to pick-up the connection - not ideal if you need to stay connected. If you're looking for a picturesque base to sight-see that region (and I would highly recommend you visiting VITRE, MONT ST MICHEL & SAINT MALO), then the accommodation is great, if you're after peace and quiet, swimming pool, safe place for the kids and wi-fi, then i'm afraid not so great. Response: We are sad to receive this review at the end of another very successful season. Despite our best efforts (nature being beyond our control), our countryside location in Mayenne was obviously not the right choice on this occasion.

“A lovely gite in a very peaceful spot” We received a lovely welcome and generous welcome pack from Sylvia and Charlie. The gite, which has been very tastefully converted, was very comfortable, really clean with everything we needed (including a dishwasher and English TV!). The girls (aged 11 and 13) really enjoyed the pool, the games room and the 2 boulangeries in St Denis de Gastine. My husband and I had the perfect opportunity to relax in a peaceful garden and read a few books with a glass of wine or two. Sylvia, who lives with her family in the main house on site, was very helpful with advice of where to visit and we had some good days out at nearby towns and a lake. If we hadn't driven from the UK (and didn't really want to do more driving) we would have ventured further afield to Mont St Michel and the Loire valley both about 2 hours away. We went on a couple of walks locally which were lovely and if we wanted to we could have borrowed bikes.

“A great family retreat” Had a lovely week staying in a quiet, rural location with clean, modern accommodation with many 'extra' facilities which really made a difference: games room (which our two children loved), swimming pool (close second to the games room), satellite tv (so we didn't miss any of the Olympics) and a DVD library which was extensive. There was nothing we wanted for and the hosts Sylvia and Charlie were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The whole stay was very relaxing, there are supermarkets 10 minutes drive away and several quaint, medieval villages and towns within a reasonable drive. Would strongly recommend a stay , we have told all our friends and we will hopefully return soon!

“Excellent accommodation in a lovely rural setting” We spent a lovely week in the 2 bedroom Gite with our two children. The accommodation was excellent with all the necessary mod cons and equipment. The owners (Sylvia and Charlie) had organized a cot, stair gate and high chair before we had arrived and a welcome basket was on the kitchen table with milk, butter, tea, coffee etc. The surrounding property was immaculately kept with plenty for the kids and adults to enjoy. Sylvia and Charlie were the perfect hosts offering invaluable advice and suggestions on day trips and local attractions. We would strongly recommend this accommodation for both families and couples.

“Peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable stay” Stayed in the two bedroom gite as a single parent with two children age 12 and 10. We all had a great time. The owners are friendly and very helpful. The games room was enjoyed by both children as was the swimming pool (a little cold for mum!). Area is very peaceful with lots of lovely traditional towns and villages to visit nearby. Would definitely recommend.

“Very comfortable and welcoming” We had the greatest welcome from Sylvia on arrival and she tirelessly made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed throughout our stay. The houses were spotlessly clean. Syliva miust be the most attentive hostess on the planet. Both houses (which are interconnnected) have been thoughfully and tastefully renovated. The standard of the renovation work is outstanding throughout, making the places very comfortable and easy to stay in. The kitchens are well appointed with everything that is standard plus more. We also found the games room to be a valuable addition (because of weather), as was the laundry facility. Unfortunately, we were not able to use the pool, the bicycles or outside babecue area (because of the weather). However, the pool area looks great if you have the sun. We had a great week at this gite in spite of the weather - it was raining when we arrived, when we left and every day in between - but that was just bad luck! A very relaxing week. “Beautiful French countryside setting” Our second holiday in L'Echerbaudiere, still as delightful! Beautiful country setting with charming accommodation. Was made very welcome by the owners...a home from home. Games room and outside activities including pool kept the children entertained. Local wine kept the adults entertained!! A really relaxing holiday.
