Pembrokeshire has some of the very best surf beaches in Wales, with breaks for every level of surfer. With little interruption of South Westerly swells beaches like Newgale and Freshwater West pick up any swell going. In bigger storm swells travelling a little further to beaches like Abermawr or Freshwater East will help you find more sheltered breaks, often with great offshore conditions when other sites are blown out. Despite the number of excellent spots, there will usually be somewhere to surf that the crowds haven't reached, and even the most popular tourist beaches like Whitesands and Newgale only become busy during the summer months. There's a great atmosphere in Pembrokeshire, with a relaxed surf culture. If the swell doesn't arrive then there are lots of other activities to keep you outdoors!
The St David's area
St Davids, Pembrokeshire is Britain's smallest city. It is a beautiful and unique city surrounded by some of the finest coastline in Europe. The city of St Davids lies on the River Alun and is located on the St David's peninsula. Granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II because of the presence of the cathedral, St Davids is in reality a small beautiful village. Situated within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park St Davids is surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery renowned for its beauty and abundance of wildlife.
Whitesands Bay, one of the many beautiful beaches in the area, carries the prestigious European Blue Flag Award. St Davids Cathedral has been the dominant presence since the 12th century and was a popular pilgrimage destination throughout the Middle Ages and indeed remains so to this day attracting thousands of visitors every year. Adjacent to the cathedral stand the magnificent ruins of the medieval Bishops Palace. The city of St Davids has a great deal to offer every visitor. Many people have fallen to the charm of St Davids including current New Zealand rugby Coach Graham Henry who lists St Davids as his favourite place in the World.
Solva is known as the jewel of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, lies only a few miles to the East and is situated on the beautiful West Wales coast. An ideal location for walking, sailing, fishing or simply relaxing amongst the shops, galleries and restaurants set in beautiful scenery. It lies on a deep ravine at the mouth of the River Solva and consists of a long street ending at the small harbour. You will find several local pubs providing great food and atmosphere, there is also a local shop that includes a post office, newsagent and many holiday items such as fishing tackle and beach items. From Solva harbour you can take a boat trip to view the local wildlife or even a fishing trip to catch some fresh fish for a nice BBQ. Quay jumping is a favourite past time of local children, as is crab fishing. Sailboat and water activity courses can also be booked from the quay.
Ramsey Island is well worth a visit during your stay. It is a dramatic off-shore island, a mile off Pembrokeshire’s coast. The island covers approximately 600 acres and features 400ft high cliffs, which teem with breeding seabirds and is now owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Ramsey Island is accessible by a regular boat service from St Justinian’s, which crosses the spectacular Ramsey sound, with its infamous and treacherous reef known as the Bitches. The island is home to several thousand seabirds in the season, including razor-bills, kittiwakes, fulmers, chough, guilliemot, raven, peregrine and puffin. The caves and beaches around Ramsey are breeding grounds for the largest concentration of grey seals who give birth to over 400 white coated pups during the Autumn.
