The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The Languedoc region enjoys one of the mildest climates in France and provides a relaxing atmosphere all year round - it boasts 300 days of sunshine a year!

There is much to see and do - miles of golden sandy beaches, the fantastic scenery and walking opportunities of the foothills of the Pyrenees, skiing at Font Romeu and Les Angles can be reached in just over an hour, Watersports, Fishing, the Spas at nearby Le Boulou and Amelie-les-Bains, Nature Reserves for bird-watching (such as the close-by Etang de Canet), the fabulous day out at the Reserve Africaine at Sigean, the medieval walled city of Carcassonne - and much, much more!

The area is steeped in history, from the Albigensian Crusades of the 11th and 12th century, which led to the annihilation of the Cathars, to the modern day controversy at Renne Le Chateau highlighted in recent best selling books - the runied Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertuse are under an hour away.

The proximimity to Spain adds to the variety of the region and they are very proud of their Catalan heritage. It is also one of the largest wine producing areas of France - a wonderful variety and many opportunities for wine tasting at the local wine producers.

We cannot list all possibilities here - we leave a Guide Book, Map and comprehensive Visitor Information Book in the apartment for guests to peruse at their leisure.

St Cyprien / St Cyprien Plage area

St Cyprien Plage is located on the Mediterranean coast approximately 20 kms east of Perpignan. It caters for all tastes; mile after mile of golden sandy beaches - all with European Blue Flag awards - a fantastic Marina, a European standard Golf Course (Golf de St Cyprien), a fun water park (Aqualand), Stables, Sports Complex (Grand Stade), bicycle hire and a go-karting facility all within a maximum 10 minutes drive of the apartment. There are also many watersports and fishing opportunities in and around the area.

Within a 5 minute stroll of the apartment there is a local shopping centre with supermarket, restaurants, bar/café and assorted small shops where you will find everything for your day-to-day needs.

A short walk brings you to the main St.Cyprien Marina which is a hive of activity with its numerous shops, restaurants, bars, cafés, nightclub and casino. On summer evenings you will often find artists selling their work on the quayside and a variety of open air entertainment.

St Cyprien is also a working port and every day the local fishing boats land their catch which they sell from the quayside – an opportunity to buy wonderfully fresh fish at very reasonable prices.

From the harbour various boat trips available – for fishing, a trip along the beautiful coastline of the Côte Vermeille to Collioure – which is extremely pretty and popular with artists – or further on into Spain as the coastline changes to one of rocky slopes with beautiful coves, bays and small harbours.

St Cyprien has a traditional street market - Friday morning throughout the year and also Tuesday morning from mid-June to mid-September - selling a wide variety of goods including the superb local fruit and vegetables, cheeses, local honey and, of course, wine.

The wonderful nature reserve around the Etang de Canet at the north end of St Cyprien is home to a large variety of birds, including flamingoes, and is a bird-watcher's paradise. The well defined paths lead round the Etang with several look-out huts to sit, observe and enjoy the peace of this delightful haven.

Spain is under an hour away and the ski resorts, such as Font Romeu, can be reached in just over an hour.

Guestbook

We had a fantastic time and didn't want to come home! We loved the area and plan to go back in the future. Thanks for all your help. Miss H, Surrey

We had a very pleasant holiday again this year. Our son visited us whilst we were there - he was very impressed with the layout and views from the apartment. He also asked us to let you know that the Information Folder and directions were the best he had come across in the last few years. Please let us know when you start booking for 2007 as we can now fly directly from Manchester to Perpignan. Mrs C. Deeside
