Residence du Soleil
About the home
Perfect for families, with a long sandy beach and other facilities less than 5 minutes walk away which allows returning to the apartment during the day for meals or rest, or an early morning walk to buy croissants or freshly caught fish at the port.
You can happily spend many days never using a car or bus but it would be a shame to miss Perpignan on summer Thursday evenings when the pedestrianised centre is given over to free music performances in many squares and street corners.
There are many other beaches stretching more or less continuously for 20 kilometres from north to south and the famous Cote Vermeille with the unique fauviste painters' village of Collioure, accessible by road or by boat from St. Cyprien port.
If you want to explore further, there are many places of geological, historical and cultural interest in the immediate area and endless walks of all levels of difficulty in the nearby Pyrenees and on mystical Mont Canigou which at 2000 metres dominates the landscape on clear days.
Take the ''little yellow train' from Perpignan into the High Pyrenees. Visit the many ancient towns and villages up the Tet and Tech valleys or the Cathar castles in the Corbieres about an hour to the north where you can swim and go canyonning in limestone gorges.
The Spanish border is half an hour's drive with the pretty town of Girona and the Dali museum in Figueras a further half hour away and the Costa Brava and Barcelona beyond.......

Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Roussillion aka French Catalonia was once part of the kingdom of Majorca, the royal palace can be visited in the old capital of Perpignan, as can the King's summer palace in Collioure. Finally handed by Spain to the French in 1659 as part of Louis XIV's marriage settlement, Perpignan retains an edgy in-between cultural atmosphere, as home also to the descendants of Arab and French north Africans.
In winter the snow-capped Pyrenees seem almost at the city's doorstep. The area as a whole was the refuge of thousands of Spanish at the end of the Civil War 70 years ago. The hinterland is dotted with medieval towns and villages many with beautiful churches and monasteries, the land between mostly agricultural, producing soft fruits especially cherries and apricots (and glorious blossom in springtime), and of course wine, including a variety of specialised local fortified brands with many places where they can be tasted.
To the immediate north, near the airport, begins the department of Aude, with the Corbieres mountains also heavily dependent on wine production and home to the castles that became the last defence of the 'heretic' Cathars.Often hard to distinguish from their rocky surrounds the closest of these, Queribus and Peyrepetuse are being restored gradually, making them easier to climb.
Both give stunning views of immediate and further mountain ranges that are snow-capped for at lease half the year. The larger and entirely restored city of Carcassonne is further north but easily accessible just off the motorway.
Limestone gorges criss cross the region with lovely places for swimming, kayaking and canyoning. At Tautavel, there is a really good museum showing the pre-history of the area where a human skull estimated to be 450.000 years old was found in a cave.
Although increasingly popular with both French and foreign holiday-makers the coast has almost no large-scale hotel development and very little high rise bulilding has been permitted. The marina at St Cyprien plage is the second largest in the Mediterranean yet the town has an open aspect and relaxed feel. Busy on market days, the streets are never very congested and the long promenade is only for pedestrians and bicycles.
The beach to the north of the town is entirely undeveloped and just across the road from the brackish etang, sometimes home to flamingoes. Further south the Cote Vermeille offers sheltered rocky bays suitable for snorkelling and diving.....
The St Cyprien / St Cyprien Plage area
All the towns and villages of the region hold frequent musical and cultural events and many, including St Cyprien, have their own art galleries with permanent and changing exhibitions. Most famous is Ceret's Musee d'Art Moderne with tis collection of works by celebrated residents and visitors, including Picasso, Chagall and Soutine.
Besides its regular summer 'jeudis', in September Perpignan hosts the International Photo Journalism Festival with exhibitions of work housed in the most impressive medieval buildings. The ancient centre of the city is almost all pedestrianised and a maze of restaurants and shops. The restaurants around the harbour at St. Cyprien specialise in locally caught fish, especially mussels.
