The Normandy region

For a panoramic view, climb to the top of La Roche d'Oëtre (the Oëtre Rock) in the middle of alpine Suisse Normande (Swiss Normandy).

Or for a close-up of the local flora and fauna, draw on expert knowledge at the River & Countryside Centre, at Ségrie-Fontaine.

Sir Lancelot is supposed to have hunted here, in the Andaines Forest. It, and the Ecouves Forest, with its famous star-shaped crossroads, are just two of Orne's majestic oak and beech woodlands, all of them an open invitation to adventure …

Hike or bike, ride or enjoy a carriage outing through these magnificent forests, part of the Normandy Maine and Perche natural parks. The Ecouves Forest offers an easy hike (1hr 20mins) around its star-shaped crossroads, with 24 'info stations' telling you all about woodland life. Or explore the Perche, Bellême and Réno-Valdieu forests, closer to Mortagne. Before you set off, drop in at the Maison du Parc visitor centres at Carrouges or at Courboyer for maps and local tips.

The battle plan: Canadian, Polish and British units block the Wehrmacht's escape to the north. France's 2nd Armoured Division and the US Third Army close the pincer from the south.

It becomes one of the bloodiest encounters of World War II, as thousands die in the 'The Corridor of Death'. But the path to Paris – and its liberation – is decisively cleared.

Orne has played its hand in Europe's history before. Henry II and the fabulous Eleanor of Aquitaine had a Plantagenet court here, at Domfront. William The Conqueror, who was born in nearby Calvados, once besieged the castle there.

Today, you can relive their stories and the epic 1944 struggle across a network of battle sites, museums and memorials, and via a series of special Battle of Normandy trails.

The village is located near the main road connecting Flers in Domfront . Its population once predominantly agricultural works now often in either of these cities.

Its territory is mostly covered by farmland in a landscape wooded mesh loose. Many slopes have been leveled for larger agricultural parcels, especially during consolidation operations. However a network of sunken lanes has been preserved.
