The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region

Tarn et Garonne is an unspoilt rural area of France with pleasant rolling scenery where a traditional way of life is preserved, with farmers tending their fields and markets bursting with fresh produce. The pace of life is un-hurried and there are no traffic jams anywhere.

The countryside is dotted with picturesque medieval villages and towns in which you can stroll and enjoy galleries and small shops with regional merchandise. This department is named after two mighty rivers, Tarn and Garonne, but the third one, Aveyron, also runs through our part of France and provides some spectacular scenery with cliffs and gorges near St Antonin or Bruniquel (20 min drive). Several cliff-top villages around are officially recognised as the most beautiful villages in France. One should not leave the area without visiting Cordes, Najac and St-Cirq Lapopie all of which will take your breath away.

The latter is perched on cliffs overlooking the Lot river 30mins to the north and continuing on by car brings you to the prehistoric caves of Pech-merle and pilgrimage site of Rocamadour. Another scenic beauty is the village of Najac 20mins drive to the south east. Cordes is 40 mins by car.

The larger towns of Cahors and Montauban have well preserved cobble streets, atmospheric centres, and are good for shopping There are leisure facilities on the river banks and lakes all around with the possibility to hire canoes and kayaks. There are 2 lakes nearby: one in Caylus, and another bigger one in Parisot.

St Antonin Noble Val / Caylus area

.Every village here has its own fete in summer, with concerts, communal meals and brocante markets. You can go round them one after the other, and the local tourist office in Caylus (syndicate d'initiative) will provide leaflets and info on all of the events. Medieval Caylus sits in an extremely pretty position, surrounded by the hills on all sides.

It has a historic church and a castle and a surprising spread of facilities for such a small place: several bakers, butchers, supermarkets, hairdressers, restaurants, bars, pharmacy, 2 GP practices, bank, post office, tourist office, heritage centre, internet centre, lake and tennis courts.
