The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region

The elevated position of the house and gardens gives the property splendid, uninterrupted views of hills and valleys. It provides a protected habitat for a wide variety of birds (including hoopoe, golden oriel, barn owls, buzzards), bats and of butterflies in a peaceful setting. The beautifully restored buildings enjoy the full sun whilst providing ample shade from mature trees. There is ample parking.

The extensive gardens form a series of terraces and offers relaxation in a spectacular and safe setting with a range of decorative trees including cypresses, mulberry, catalpa, parasol pine, evergreen magnolia and acacia.

The small, unspoilt and friendly village of Verfeil (a Village Fleuri ) is within easy walking distance (1km) and has a good boulangerie and general store, garage, bar/restaurant, post office, tennis court and very active boulodrome. Nearest petrol is12 km.

Mas de Cazelles is within 30 minutes driving time of a number of stunning mediaeval/bastide villages and towns, most having regular market days. The former Cistercian Abbaye de Beaulieu is just 2 km away and holds musical events and art exhibitions in a romantic setting. Varen at 5km has a 14th century castle and lovely riverside setting. St Antonin-Noble-Val (15 minutes) sits in the spectacular Gorges de l’Aveyron along with Penne and Bruniquel, and its busy Sunday market is a must. Najac and Cordes are two imposing hill towns brimming with history, fine buildings, restaurants and speciality shopping. Cordes puts on medieval jousting events and a superb music festival each July. The Thursday market at Villefranche is always an experience. In fact markets exits daily somewhere nearby, and in summer antique fairs/brocantes can be seen every weekend along with local fetes, concerts range from the local accordeonist or string quartet to the Monteverdi Choir.

The nearest station is at Lexos, some 8 km away, which has 3 daily trains to Toulouse for airbus, space centre, and opportunities for a wider range of cultural interests, restaurants, bars, retail therapy etc.

Activties in this idyllic part of rural France are wide ranging from canoeing/kayaking on the Aveyron, to hang gliding, to particpating in a wide range of practical sports at La Decouverte at Carmaux, to the water centre at Cordes, to painting the local scene in peaceful surroundings. This is also ideal countryside to explore on foot or by cycle and to get away from the hustle and bustle.

St Antonin Noble Val / Verfeil area

Verfeil is a friendly village fleuri with basic shopping facilities and an excellent garage. A tranquil centre with its halle and cool church, is far from the madding crowd. It still sees off spring with due pomp in the traditional bonfire style and holds its annual world music festival in early August. Sadly the tradition of wine making is now past, but Verfeil is on the doorstep for exploring the rewarding Gaillac vineyard not half an hour away by car, with its annual wine festival in early August.

St Antonin is in a stunning situation in the steep gorge of the river Aveyron and is a most picturesque and lively medieaval town in summer, best known by holiday makers for its thriving, bustling Sunday morning market. It is still possible to get lost in the ancient back streets! Lively bars and riverside restaurants are very popular and meet all needs. Unusual for rural France it boasts a very good cinema, showing films at the same time as national release and with a focus on original version films from around the world. Exhibitions of art in the summer months and a mini grand prix race and traditional harvesting events are just some of the activities to look out for.

Mas de Cazelles is easy to find and easy to reach. Travelling by air offers a considerable choice of flights to Toulouse (Blagnac) airport - about 75 minutes drive away - whilst it is just an hour by car from Rodez (Marcillac)airport which is served by Ryanair. Hertz and Europecar are popular car hire firms, but a full range is available at Toulouse.

By car from the Channel ports is a comfortable 1 or 2 day's drive, depending on the crossing used. The A20 now runs right through to Caussade, just 30 minutes away. Much of this road is toll free. From Caussade it is a short drive eastwards to Caylus (one radar trap, but well signed) and then 10 minutes on the well-signed local D20 road to Verfeil.
