Home description

OUR HOUSE, which is believed to date from the 15th Century, is set in the medieval village of PENNE overlooked by the remains of its castle perched on a rocky outcrop rising sheer from the river AVEYRON far below. Since 2003 the house has been lovingly restored, redecorated and equipped to a very high standard as our SECOND HOME IN FRANCE.

As such, it is NOT a typical 'holiday cottage'.

You should stay here if you enjoy peace, lovely old towns and villages, magnificent scenery and a rich cultural heritage. Today, you can walk along medieval paths and through the gateways that once secured the village, past houses formerly occupied by the Knights Templars and other religious orders. But amongst this antiquity there are also amenieties for modern day visitors, a restaurant, a bar, a tourist information office and a well stocked general store.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region

You should come here if you enjoy stunning countryside, lovely old towns and villages, good walking and a mild, sunny climate. If it's sport and adventure you seek, this lovely area offers wonderful opportunities for canoeing, fishing, golf and long-distance walking.

The river AVEYRON carves its way through the renowned GORGES D'AVEYRON flowing through the departements of Tarn and Tarn et Garonne before joining the river Tarn just north of Montauban. Some of the most stunning of these gorges are those around Narjac, St.Antonin-Noble-Val and the small village of PENNE noted for its medieval houses and the remains of its chateau perched precariously, high above the river.

ST. ANTONIN-NOBLE-VAL, about 15km/9 miles from PENNE, was so named by the Romans because of the beauty of its position on the shores of the AVEYRON, beneath the white cliffs of the Roc d'Angers. St Antonin is home to many attractive buildings including the Maison de Consuls built in 1125 and now a museum.

ALBI is the birthplace of many famous artists including Toulouse-Lautrec. In addition to the magnificent cathedral, you can visit the museum dedicated to the city's most famous artist.

St Antonin Noble Val / Penne, France area

The traditional market held in St. Antonin every Sunday morning is a MUST and really should not be missed.

If you are interested in local history, much of it very bloody, our little village of PENNE has much to keep you occupied. The village developed during the middle ages with its timber framed and stone built houses huddled together on the steep slopes immediately below its castle which sits precariously on the tip of a rocky outcrop rising sheer from the river AVEYRON far below.

The village and its castle featured in the French religious wars and was later involved in the hundred years war alternating many times between English and French control.

Today though, you can walk safely along medieval rues and through the gateways that once secured the village. You can wander through Place d'Eglise and visit the church which was formerly not only a house of prayer but also a fortress and refuge capable of sheltering the villagers in the event of attack. You can see the fortified clock tower and the ancient grain measures as you walk past houses once occupied by the Hospitalliers of St John (Knights Templars) and other religious orders.
