Home description
Originally designed as a family getaway, Le Vieux Ecole is an inviting, comfortable and exceptionally well furnished holiday home.
The house is situated in the small rural village of St Martial, Varen. St Marcial is described as ‘tres tranquil’, stroll around the village and you will find fruit trees bearing plums, figs, apples, pears and blackberry bushes alongside every lane. Despite the peacefulness of country life, a small collection of gites and a smattering of visitors give the village a holiday feel. With the surrounding countryside affording pleasant views of farms and woodlands, St Martial is truly the perfect retreat from the usual hustle and bustle of modern life.
The village is well located for exploring and enjoying the region, particularly the Aveyron and Tarn Gorges and the many Bastide towns. Enjoyable rambles through the surrounding stunning countryside can begin and end at the house.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region
This area is renowned for its “bastide'' towns and villages. Of these, Najac and Cordes sur Ciel are perhaps the best known as they are wonderful examples of living medieval, hill-top fortifications and date from the 13th century. Cordes, for example, was founded by Raymond, Count of Toulouse during the violent years of the Cathar Wars and Albigensian Crusades. Today, the walls and houses of both Cordes sur Ciel and Najac stand in their entirety, having been painstakingly restored by the artisans and artists who now live and work there.
Wine connoisseurs can investigate the local vineyards of Gaillac (starting 25 minutes to the south) and Cahors (1 hour to the north), Languedoc (2.5 hours to the south) or the relatively unknown Marcillac to the northeast near Rodez. The area is also home to many restaurateurs who can guide you on your choice of good wine.
St Antonin Noble Val / St Martial de Varen area
The village is well located for exploring and enjoying the region, particularly the Aveyron and Tarn Gorges and the many Bastide towns. Enjoyable rambles through the surrounding stunning countryside can begin and end at the house.
Weekly markets can be found in Villefranche, Caussade and St Antonin-noble-val with smaller markets in nearby towns such as Najac.
Cordes sur Ciel, with its summer festivals, concerts and Saturday market is a short drive away. Gaillac and Cahors, the regional wine centres can be reached in 45 minutes and the fabulous Millau Bridge is only 1½ -2 hours drive along the beautiful Tarn valley.
Family entertainment is also available at the Cap Découverte theme park including swimming pool, karting, dry-slope skiing and tobogganing, skating, rollerblading, cycling and a museum of the old mines and local history.
The pretty bastide town of Villefranche de Rouergue (30 minutes) will meet all your shopping needs including hypermarkets, tabacs, newsagents, banks, post office, boulangerie/patisseries, boucherie, sports shops, bars/restaurants as well as a large, lively market on Thursdays.
Najac, an enchanting hilltop bastide town, is approximately 6kms away. You will find a boulangerie, epicerie, patisserie, artisan shops, bars and restaurants. In addition there is a river area where you will find an exceptional open air municipal swimming pool with diving boards. There are a number of rivers in the surrounding area offering water sports.
There is also a night club situated approximately 2kms away on the road to Laguepie.
Albi has a water park.
